You've missed the legal / regulatory side of things. Apparently this has just recently changed, but telcos are highly regulated in the US and they are legally required to execute calls placed by their customers. This means that t

Ah yes, our annual budget. The perfect place to decide if TikTok can be on government phones, and what online sellers should do to police counterfeit goods. The absurdity of these people passing bills they have never read will never disapp

YouTube created that problem by incentivizing longer videos. And now we have videos with tons of fluff. Similarly Google incentivizes longer webpages, so now we have recipes that start with a novella about grandma’s cooking before showing

I'd rather politicians sell stupid trading cards to raise cash than to accept bribes from Goldman Sachs via speaking fees. AOC also sells a ton of overpriced merch to raise cash, so it's not unheard of.

This is entirely dependent on what city you live in and who you elect to local leadership positions. My brother's bike was stolen in college when he lived in Logan Utah. As a non-native he was shocked to find that the cops put out a d

It's not so easy -- you have to prove that they know (or should have known) it was stolen, which isn't easy. People like to blame the cops for everything, but the prosecutors are where the current breakdown in law and order is hap

Twitter really needs to move into the longer form video space to give YouTube some competition. YouTube has gotten very lazy with their near monopoly on long form video and now only innovates by increasing the number of ads every quarter t

2.1 megajoules of energy in lasers to make 2.5 megajoules of heat energy. If you turned that heat energy into electricity (our ultimate goal here) you'd have: (2.5 megajoules produced * 50% loss in conversion to electricity) - 2.1 mega

I can't figure out why the media is doing such a terrible job covering this (other than Matt Levine, his coverage has been flawless). Is it because SBF gave a bunch of money to politicians? Is it because FTX got investment dollars fro

Absurd. They need to freeze their max mortgage and keep it there for the foreseeable future to stop endless price inflation. And maybe the Fed could start selling some of their almost 3T in mortgages while they’re at it. https://

This is an age-old panic that happens with each new technology. The printing press was seen as dangerous. Then the phone, then TV, and then the internet. And now it's social media. Each time the arguments are the same. People worry

You're cherry picking. Look at Joseph McCarthy and see a counter-example. He used the exact same logic: to prevent a Soviet-style totalitarian government in the US, we had to be intolerant of everyone left of mainstream Democrats. It

This is the exact logic used by Joseph McCarthy, and I think it's safe to say that was a failed experiment. > Therefore the speech of one side must be tolerated and supported; the speech of the other must be squelched and restricted

Receipts and invoices are dead simple to forge. Besides, if I want to sell a used book on Amazon, maybe I don’t have the receipt anymore. No, the easiest solution is to prosecute shoplifters - not to reorganize honest society around them. I

Nobody really cares about clocks being celestially "off" by a minute either. So this isn't a once-a-century thing, it's adding-a-leap-15-minutes-once-a-millenia issue.
