Somehow this makes me feel better that it’s not just an American phenomenon - that we don’t have a monopoly on callous greed.

I’m absolutely with you on that. The phenomenon itself is interesting and worth discussing, but that term is just so unpalatable. Also, the term doesn’t really capture the meaning well. Ideally the word would semantically suggest the user-

Agreed, SNG is a truly excellent show, I can’t get enough of it. Though I’m worried Paramount is going to drop it. The open secret in streaming these days is that production and distribution costs far exceed revenue, and a reckoning has to

I recently bought a Chevy Bolt that pretty much meets these criteria. It’s a fine car, without many frills, and about $10K less than a basic Tesla Model 3.

Sorry, I’m sure this was annoying at the time, but making up that argument is hilarious in retrospect, no?

The layout and graphic design of SciAm in that era was clean, crisp, austere and gorgeous. I’ll never forget the issue - 1985, I believe - with stereograms of DNA and RNA. 3D images, delivered in a magazine!

Times change quickly. It was less than ten years ago that the second wing of the mall was completely renovated, with a food court that was an eclectic and upscale delight. Now it’s destined to become yet another dead and haunted mall.

Upon reading the headline, I assumed this was related to the recent research suggesting that sucralose damages DNA. As someone who was drinking a sugar free energy drink every day, that was enough to get me to quit. The pure somatic horror

Sideloading an app is not a sustainable way to distribute a commercial app. It's even more fragile than the official route, and it's a lot to ask of an end user, not to mention the sketchy feel to it.

This is what I was afraid to hear, thanks for sharing this. My guess is that if you want to build on their platform, you’ll have to kiss the ring of social networking, which is something I’m not too interested in.

Has anyone here built a business around the Quest 2? A game or app, or custom development? I actually love the device, but I’m not sure how easy the ecosystem is for developers, nor how much traction the device has (or could have) as a no

Let me take a moment to express gratitude that I have no idea what “DID,” “tradcath,” and “groyper” mean. Seems like I’ve made the right choice to eschew Twitter and Reddit.

For a mainstream Hollywood film, "A Few Good Men" is quite nuanced. Colonel Jessup's actions are plainly illegal, and in the end he is arrested for them, but his point still has merit: society must be protected, and perhaps

This article and others like it reappear on HN every few months, and that’s a good thing. Absentee leadership is a big problem, especially in tech, where managers have been led to believe that the best way to lead engineers is to “leave the

This is a really interesting point, thanks for saying this. I absolutely agree with you. Do you happen to have sources for this? I can do my own research but I thought I’d ask in case you already are aware of some.

Some people are annoyed with the way Docker (the company) has tried to monetize the technology by revoking free repos from open-source teams. If I recall, Docker doubled back on that. Realistically, Docker is a fine choice for this.

This kind of thing has to be fought at the highest level, specifically, overturning (or otherwise neutralizing) Smith v. Maryland. That ruling began the greatest assault on the Fourth Amendment since the Civil War. Also, Maryland v. King. (
