One thing I find myself doing over and over is taking as much logic as possible out of side effecting functions and placing that in a pure function, then passing the return value to the side effecting function.

I might be biased (I'm the author), but I don't think that emacs-starter-kit prevents you from doing things the normal way. You can still modify your emacs config and include vendor elisp, and ESK doesn't make it more difficu

The book uses common lisp, so you'll need to know how to read that. Otherwise I think you should be fine. It's not a book about idioms or coding styles, but about thinking in lisp. If the code examples are confusing, it'll be
