This and the article on Der Spiegel [1] mentioning how the NSA has a whole catalog of custom firmware for all major HDD makers tells me never to yield to the temptation of relying on built-in hardware-based full disk encryption. [1]: http:

my impression is the OP is a bit loose and ambiguous in the some of the terms used like "plain text" and "local" etc; and the TC article makes the confusion worse. So just for the record, are these all of the actual issu

I'm on Debian with Gnome 3.8 and been quite happy overall. I was recently working on a Gnome 2.x machine and couldn't believe how terrible and difficult to use it all seemed – even though I used 2.x for many years. I'm not su

A friend of mine made the following remark when she was little, travelling on the autobahn: "darnit, Ausfahrt must be one huge city, since all the exits are pointing to it"

Interesting indeed. I came to the same conclusion for my pet project (as of yet unpublished), a distributed content addressable data store is only useful if there are attack resistant trust metrics included.

I'm not so sure about that. See for example hushmail in 2007: http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2007/11/encrypted-e-mai/ While with this specific case here they intercepted the passphrase server-side, they specifically hinted that it would

speaking of 200 vs 204: any way for the client to signal he's OK with just a 204 after updates/deletes?

Well, I'm guessing your second and third point could be tacked on to HAL. I see your point with the first one, although I must say in our APIs we have rarely encountered duplication. And the recursive nature of HAL makes it really easy to g

I always interpreted /collection?xxx=yyy as adding constraints to a collection - that's perfectly "REST-like" (actually URIs don't really matter, but I suppose you're talking about conventions). And in that respect /collection?ids=1,2,3,4 i

Things like nix do too. Even apt-get used to work on MacOSX (fink).

As a tech co-founder, I thought this deck was spot on. Maybe it's because I've been through that experience that I don't feel threatened at all byt hat slide. "Stop writing code/did you talk to your customers yet?" - he's so right. I've had

Right now it's vapour, but there's also this: http://www.alwaysinnovating.com/products/mecam.htm It promises better hardware (Cortex-A9 SoC, 1.0-1.5GHz CPU, 1GB RAM, SD card, 2.4GHz/5GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth), at a third of the price (MSRP

If it starts to rely on systemd, the question you should be asking, is: why does this program want to depend on systemd? It's to interact with the lower plumbing - ie. set up hostname, locale, timedate, multi-seat etc. If these interfaces a

That's really surprising to me. Whenever I tried Perl it always turned into a painful mess. When I started using Ruby I felt it was the best of Perl and the best of ... Smalltalk I suppose — and I never looked back. Maybe I'm missing someth

Damn straight! I don't understand why so few people know about Nix. I'm hoping Nix(OS) will take off eventually. I try to play with it from time to time, but I haven't made the investment yet to really contribute.

I want to like it, because I know I could improve my workflow quite a bit. However, IMHO: - the strict dependency on Sun's JRE instead of OpenJDK was the first annoyance (I'm on Debian). - the UI is just overwhelming me - lots of things hap

Works for me on Debian. Battery life is somewhat shorter, but not to the point that it bothers me. That said, it took a few kernel iterations before every last bit of hardware was fully supported.
