It's like trying to cut down on the amount of bad writing in the world. Sure, I guess aesthetically it'd be nice if I never had to look at any bad writing. But bad writing is part of the process of becoming a good writer, so there'd ultimat

Web fonts typically look crappy on Windows in general. I've Googled around to try and solve the problem as a user, but I think it's because browsers tend to use Windows' GDI rendering instead of DirectDraw (or vice-versa, I forget). Now tha

Indeed. I realize Scott's article was tongue-in-cheek, but this is all nothing to worry about. It just means that icons will have a history, an etymology, just like words, or Chinese pictograms, or, hell, even the symbols in our Latin alpha

I think calling it "condescending" is awfully uncharitable. It seems obvious to me that any curmudgeonliness was tongue-in-cheek, but maybe that's because I'm more familiar with Scott's writing.

I tend to use "folder" just because it's known by everyone, whereas "directory" is only going to be known by geeks.

Plenty of us care about visual design. Typography posts, in particular, routinely get upvoted. Participants of Hacker News (just like Reddit, or Twitter, or comedians) are not a monolith.

I hate DRM too, but the one area where I'm conflicted is with libraries. There's a strong disincentive to buy if one can just download a book without restrictions on availability or borrowing period.

I don't think the aidenn0 is talking about falsifiability, but accuracy. As in, Newtonian mechanics is not 100% accurate, but it works well enough for macro-level calculations. Like Asimov said, "when people thought the earth was flat, they

The font is really hard to read in Chrome on Windows 7 [0]. A bit better on Firefox/Win7 [1], but horizontal strokes are still very thin (look at H, L). Please, everyone, test your web fonts on multiple platforms. It's not WYSIWYG. [0] htt

Please, for the love of Loki, can we all stop equating our subjective opinions with objective truth? Your tastes are different than others. That doesn't make them "arrogant" - at least, not necessarily.
