I want a FOSS PL with bloated higher level primitives and APIs, like Wolfram. Think about how having a data frame class (+meta-programming) makes such a big impact in R. I want the same for images, sound, etc.

There is a wealth of startups out there takings small hordes of junior devs out of non-CS grads. Learning on the go, they become proper devs or get into business a few year later. Projects get out there by pure force of will. They are like

I disagree with this. I used to have passion hobbies until I became so time-poor that keeping them would mean cut the little amount of time that I spent with my family, or not being able going out of my apartment for a walk.

> even paying for software which is hostile to them and their interests Consumers have been sold a dream, and after the tech advances and sweatshoping can't go farther, they would rather eat skimpflation day after day than pay more.

I think it is just part of the commercialization of the web, the same dynamics that happens everywhere where a firm with a good product/brand change it to increase cash flows or some other KPI. Though much more clear in consumer market

> but I’ll take it over how finance jobs are where it’s all about connections and where you interned when you were 19 Is this different than Big Tech really? If you do not go to the right schools, internships, whatever it can take years

You will be surprised. The absolute worst candidates can stay very long in market and appear everywhere. Someone can look good on paper but a short call can tell you right away that you do not want to deal with them.

I am actually the other way around. I use them as one data point to find new libraries in fields I have never worked in. They tend to be incomplete and no curation at all. But still useful.

Initially it had amazing writers, the UI was never good really. However it was from the beginning an unsustainable business, fueled by VC.

R is another language that it is bashed constantly, but it is generally much productive in its field (EDA and stats on structured data) than the alternatives like Python.

IMO a little bit the same and in my case I ended up here because it pays well. I had other hobbies before that could not monetize no matter what.

I might be reading this wrong (I always have problems calculating AWS costs), but this seems VERY expensive. Much more than paying a 10Gbps internet plan for a year where I live.

Legal threats from some IP holders. I assume that the situation with the other part of libgen (the book one) should be similar.

Leverage just set the ceiling, then you enter on offer and demand kind of world. Software developers just have it good in 2021. Also, if OP lives in a low income country, he has better options to sell himself compared to a doctor, normally

This is one of my main gripes with MtG. It just feel like a scam, a 90s loot boxes situation. I do not want to contribute to the business model, even if the product is solid. I will probably sell my collection and print some proxies.

There are plenty of reports of: - Amazon predatory pricing - Amazon trying to mistreat their workers (including AWS) as much as they can - Amazon/AWS copying products, FOSS software, and messing up with companies that they invest into.
