This is what I did in college! Ethernet cable under the carpet and along the wall for me. I had DSL piped into a Freesco Router (a floppy disk running Linux 2.0.36). I remember finally upgrading to an ethernet based ADSL modem that had the

Working in the fintech has opened my eyes to how many shortcomings there really are in banking/ACH. What you describe above is both my nightmare, and my reality. Pipe-delimited flat files being SFTPed via cronjobs overnight. Getting th

Just like I tell people that buy cordless drills at Harbor Freight, "sometimes it IS the tool". Does that mean you can't build fast, meaningful, cool things with it? Of course you can. But, the deeper you get, the more proble

I've owned multiple DX-7s (only first gen... I've always wanted to buy a DX-7IIfd). While I liked the feel of the keys, I couldn't get passed the MIDI implementation not sending the full 0-127 velocity. (Yamaha implemented a

I like that Gary Bernhardt tweets every once in awhile something along the lines of "we have no actual evidence that any software methodology actually leads to better, less buggy software". We have people falling all over themselv

This definitely takes me back to the early AngularJS days where the ONLY thing one could do was read the source. Any questions on forums would result in, "did you read the source???". I personally HATED reading the source for that

I'd say that tsyringe is about the same level of "wiring" that one would see with a Nest.JS module. The major difference being it handles the implicit wiring a bit better. Nest.JS will freak out if you don't explicitly t

Yeah, I think the charge of "clever" is often thrown out when one uses a different way of thinking. I'm not an FP zealot at all, but I do think learning to think recursively does something to one's programming. (Working

What I like about hooks: They ask us to question some long-standing "best practices". I feel like we should do this every so often as it promotes progress in our thinking. What I dislike: They promote patterns that go against long

While this philosophy has a lot of value, it just isn't for me. I did a few apps in Go, and fought my way to a decent level of proficiency. I got to a point where I could solve some problems without constantly consulting the docs. But

Agreed. If we flood the market with programmers, the bar will most likely be raised... or salaries will simply decrease. To be clear, I still agree with teaching STEM as much as possible and bringing on the flood.
