It's obvious, what is going on here. He's got two groups he's trying to reach and "the front page of HN" isn't one of the groups. The first group is his mailing list. People who have expressed a general interes

Pay != quality. As another person mentioned, being in the UK you face different challenges. My reply was partially to help you, but also to let other American programers know that there are better options out there.

Being underpaid isn't a function of being in a particular region (assuming your in America). Middle America Jr. Devs with little/no programming experience are getting started around $70K.

You need a short term strategy (any job!) and a long term strategy(spacex, baby!). I suspect spaceX or NASA programmers aren't using Ruby, Rails, and JS. They are a good place to start, get a nice paying job, and then figure out what i

I would suggest finding ANY employment opportunity. You can always leave if your resume later. Your resume isn't a chronological list of everything you've done. It's a narrative about your greatest hits.

A couple things make your scenario less likely than you might believe. 1. Salaries rarely go down once you've landed the job. So if he can get an $70k job now and get a $5k raise each year for the next 4 years that puts him in a pretty good

I can verify that $70k outside of SF/NYC is very achievable for less than exceptional programmers doing Ruby/Python work.

They do. See: [1] Between the back tires is a flap that helps with aerodynamics. I would say that 50%+ of the trucks I see on the road have these. [2] These are much less common, but I'd guess 5% or so use these. [1] http://www.popularmech

If you notice the red balls aren't random. I could always predict what the next ball was. It's always the one straight across. Could be measuring how many people pick up on the pattern.

Twitter, Facebook, Stackoverflow are all really just CRUD apps. They face social and scaling challenges everyday among other technical challenges. I don't think he's giving CRUD apps enough credit. There's also security challenges, etc.

This sounds like a variant of the meme "I could build stackoverflow in a weekend". If you think you can build 99% of the apps out there, go out and try to build a moderately complex app. Make it better. You'll see there are all types of cha

It's an attempt to measure relative affordability, part of this is that humans are unable to take a value such as an average inflation rate of 3.4% and work backwards over 20 years. I'm not sure how useful that number is, however, I'm point
