well, you could avoid a fork by using something like awesomewm, where pressing the launcher shortcut will just open a window inside the wm directly. certainly more efficient, not simpler though.

Windows fixed this by just having %APPDATA%, and to me, its a great idea. No .config, no .local, no .share, no .randomfile, each installed program has its directory in hidden directory, and nobody has to know what each directory is for, and

Laptops are not an emergency item. when the power goes out I for one don't go immediately looking for my laptop. I look for my phone, and then immediately go looking for any flashlight, because I need to save as much power as possible

The problem is how much time do you HAVE to sink into just to learn a tool? If you have a tool with the same functionality and requires less time sink, then the previous tool is obsolete and should be tossed away.
