We are roughly the same age, and I firmly believe the internet we grew up with is not the internet we have today. I don’t think you can use our childhood as a reference point for how to raise kids nowadays.

Over the weekend I tried to tease out a sed command that would fix an uber simple compiler error from ChatGPT [0]. I gave up after 4 or 5 tries - while it got the root cause correct ("." instead of "->" because the pr

I feel exactly the same way - a few years ago I was lamenting the fact that I was writing JSON serialization/deserialization code for the 1000th time, and begging for a tool that could automate it for me. I haven't tried ChatGPT f

Generic house style is fine for a lot of real-world applications. The dirty secret of the legal profession is that they spend a huge amounts of time (aka client's money) writing clauses/pleadings/etc that have been written th

I didn't actually need the pinyin conversion (I implement that myself), it was just a test to see how well LLMs* were progressing at "out-of-domain" tasks. I always used recent newspaper headlines, so the possibility of findi

That's basically the idea! Thanks for the note on the email signup, I'll have a look - I threw it together very quickly just before I went on a plane a few weeks ago so it's very fragile.

Thanks! I agree, I'll stay away from characters, at least at an early/beginner level (although I am including them mostly for aesthetic purposes). It's a huge hurdle that lots of people don't necessarily need/want t

I’m building something similar for Chinese[0]. Every time a new language model was released, I tested it with pinyin conversion (the standard Mandarin phonetic romanization), and they all failed miserably - until ChatGPT, which so far has p

That was my reaction too, 20,000 (euros) seems quite decent for a tiny freelance engagement, and just skimming the contract, that all seems bog-standard, too. If he didn't think the money was fair, he shouldn't have accepted it. I

WER is really dataset-dependent, you can’t really compare across different test sets unless they’re almost identical (acoustic environment, microphone quality, speaker profiles, linguistic domain, etc). WER for the exact same model can vary

Ask yourself this - if we didn't need to pay to publish apps to the Store (or even less, if we could just publish apps that could be side-loaded), how many of us would voluntarily pay $99 per year for Apple's developer support? Yo

Gut feeling is that the cellphone was already far more mainstream in the year 2000 than VR is in 2022. I had one (Nokia 5110?) as a teenager (admittedly I was in the minority), but I remember they were extremely common amongst professionals

That was my original reaction to Twitch, too. Who in their right mind would pay to watch someone else play a video game? It was ludicrous to me (and to some extent, it still is). I'd make a terrible VC.
