I'm not sure how it affects your argument, but in the interest of accuracy (and presuming I haven't missed hearing about another controversial documentary) I'll mention that "Cuties" is not a documentary, but a fict

Good to see this getting some traction! While I did start with Usenet, and do remember reading this long-long ago, I didn't post it as a historical curiosity, but because I thought the advice within was still relevant to places on the

The best analogy is sorting forks, knives, and spoons when we are putting them in drawers. We can throw all silverware together. But then finding a spoon in that pile will take time whenever we need a spoon. The task changes from getting a

Normally, the "flag" text changes to "unflag". If you click that, it undoes the flagging. This does require that you be able to find the post that you flagged. Are you saying that it disappeared when you flagged it?

Great comment, and great accurate explanations of complex stuff! I'm still going to disagree with the conclusion, though. Yes, x64 has to jump over horrible hurdles to prevent instruction decode from being a bottleneck. Yes, this ma

The caching of the random[] array (almost) shouldn't matter, as the access is sequential. I'm wondering if the difference is the the number of active memory channels. How many channels does your respective computers support? Do

One could argue that it's not "fundamental", but it's definitely a functional limitation of the current Intel cores. The memory bandwidth of a single core is hardware limited by the number "Line Fill Buffers".

I think the current consensus among experts is that the instruction set is not the limiting factor. Modern x64 microprocessors have a separate front-end that handles instruction decoding. These instructions are decoded to internal propri
