While I'd be interested in seeing a serious postmortem (pre-mortem? trans-mortem?) of Google+, this flippant piece isn't the article to do it.

Elon's response to that tweet was more than a little bit epic: https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/461279062837968897 followed by: https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/461283368693669

I doubt it. I'm not a historian, but my sense is that absent the death camps and and silly wonder weapons, Germany would have been perhaps 10% or 20% more effective -- not 100% more effective. Stalingrad would probably have wrapped up

Yes, this. The same can be said for the V2. Technologically, it was wildly successful, and today most Russian rockets and many American rockets can be considered its direct descendants. However there's no question that it hastened th

I don't think your method is necessarily unfair. I just don't think it necessarily is fair, either. If all of your roommates have roughly equal views on the value of money, square footage, and various intangibles (such as, say,

I think you're missing the point. This is a value-optimisation problem, and 1.) not all value is monetary, and 2.) the perception of value is inherently subjective. That's why optimisations cannot be created via static externally

North Dakota is the only clearly discernible state boundary. Anybody know why that is? Does something about the legal regime of North Dakota really change the settlement patterns that much? Or is it some kind of artefact of the way that ND

God that article was/is riveting. I still recall the first time I read it, in one sitting, this ridiculous fat magazine in my hands. The world would be a better place if it had more journalism like this.

No, you missed the analogy. The analogy is that a human's essence or "selfhood" is merely the product of a successfully-functioning brain, in much the same way that toxin-processing is the product of a successfully-functionin

It's not about the immediate cost. It's about the fact that conditional social support creates poverty traps, by imposing the steepest marginal tax rates (sometimes exceeding 100%) on the poorest people in society. Listen to this
