This is a common misconception. It is not a small amount of noise that causes misclassification of images. It is a carefully designed and quite unique pattern that causes misclassification. It only looks like noise to the human eye, but it

I think you are hugely overestimating the importance of non-line-of-sight communication. Your example is cell phone communication. That is not the intended use case of this technology. Facebook's laser comms is part of their Aquila pro

Hi itsyogesh! Definitely it depends on having a 3D model of your environment! With all the advances in drones performing 3d scanning of an environment (dronedeploy.com and skycatch.com) we imagine we can easily incorporate the acquisition o

Beat me to it! This totally amazed me when I started working on cars. Both carburetors and direct injection creates a mixture of gasoline and air BEFORE this mixture enters the cylinder. Direct injection now seems like a misnomer ;) It make

I used to subscribe to this idea as well, until a friend of mine told me this: "Have you thought of the fact that you're enabling people to be homeless, thereby making the problem worse rather than better?". This really struck me, since I a

I can't agree more. As the article points out, we're seeing huge advances in plenty of scientific fields. We're talking about storing terabytes on a cube on DNA no larger than a drop of water, we're synthesizing drugs that travel to tumors,

Since lead-free electronics have become the norm with standards like RoHS, tin whiskers have become a real problem. This is why aero/astro electronics are still leaded!

There's actually a bunch of companies already making these - definitely not an original idea or even an original implementation. Back in 2007 we used to ride electric boards around UC Berkeley, and they only cost $600.

Are you suggesting that, because it takes skill to operate, it's a bad idea? I commute on my longboard every day between the parking structure on campus and my building, which is about a mile away - takes me 10 minutes of kicking the board

Sure, the inner workings of the system is as you describe, but the approach this article takes does make sense out of a developer standpoint, no? Sure "has_many" is just a method that the late-binding architecture of Ruby allows us to write

Funny - there was a whole stack of these lying in the 3rd floor lounge of Stanford's CS building last week. I just happened to pick one up, It's the first time i've read it, and here it pops up on Hacker News!
