This is probably a joke, but tbe halting problem is way overused and doesn't apply in situations where a non-Turing-complete computer is running a known (not arbitrary) program.

The only ads I have ever heard are sponsored ads spots within the podcast itself (that you can fast forward through), never spotify ads. Is that what you're talking about? They try hard to make it sound like a sponsor spot. If the v

People used to be better at dealing with "obvious distress." Seriously why is this argument worth 80+ comments? I agree with jacquesm -- HN (in this thread) has lost its way.

Unacceptability in the present isn't a reliable indicator either. For example, it is today socially unacceptable for me to be friends with most of my extended family because they are republicans. But that doesn't mean it's

This whole thread is a really good example of why not to judge the past by the standards of the present. There were ways of interacting that were just expected. At my first job, if you went on vacation, you expected to return to a pranked

YouTube doesn't believe it's real, though I managed to screenshot it. I seem to recall reading that advertisers can outbid premium in the ad auction, in which case you will still see ads. Can anyone confirm?

I've heard about some dynamic adds Spotify supposedly adds, that are usually not related to the podcast itself, but I've never encountered a single one like that. You probably have heard them. Old episodes of a podcast with ana

Kept indefinitely for future re-consumption. Are there any stories of this saving someone from a potential disaster? My experience has been that this only causes bugs, such as resending hundreds of thoudands of out-of-date emails.

There's still room for innovation in rapid-fire, affordable mitigations for extreme weather. Like levee-in-a-box, bridge-in-a-box, deployable temporary sea walls, etc. Also room to innovate in techniques for detecting and mitigating

We ought to reject arguments that forced stasis is the solution any time changes introduce risk. We also ought to reject the idea that forced change is the solution.

I forgot about that book! It is indeed a good one, and second the recommendation to anyone who hasn't read it. Although if that's the one with the drum people, they're kind of weird and might be off-putting to some.

Once in a whole someone has to take on projects to try to explore the solution space and break out of local optima. It doesn't always work, but when it does, the gains are orders of magnitude. One example is the nascent reusable rock

Having a list of allowed MAC addresses, enforced per-port by a managed switch (or at least by the DHCP server and router), is a first step, though naturally it's easy to spoof a MAC address.

One problem with this approach, even if it's true, is that when you combine overprosecution of victimless crimes with rampant victim-ful crime, everyone loses respect for the system.
