I'd posit that reducing the barrier to switch doesn't improve the whole user experience. Granted Apple would staunchly disagree with me on that. But when I engage in a 2 year contract, that's on the carrier-side. I should be able to use

Thanks for responding. I don't think I necessarily agree, but then again I rarely rebase because I distinctly dislike rewriting history, but I think I understand the rationale a bit better.

Sorry, pardon the ignorance, but how does past tense imply something that would be affected by rebase? It may not be linear history, but it definitely happened in the past. I guess I always looked at more as: "here's a patch", "what did y

It's weird because it kinda goes the other way too. Why in the world does GitHub truncate my commit messages now? The 80 char thing is a guideline. If git is willing to dutifully accept longer commit messages and my team and I are willin

While I agree that supporting multiple browsers & devices is a PITA, we as an industry are still employing some mindnumbingly bad testing practices. There are a lot of solid testing products out there that ease the pain. Testing as a

I think your history is a little skewed. When IE6 came out, it was an awesome browser for the time. It was light years better than anything else out there and yes, it embraced/extended HTML & CSS, but really, no other browser out ther

I actually go well out of my way to avoid pixel-perfect stuff. The cases I mentioned all affect opacity or position by > 30px. There's actually a lot that can go wrong given the different windowing systems. I'd expect there to be mor

That may be the case, but it's quite possible you just didn't catch them. Most people really don't do a rigorous comparison and even if they do, it's so menial a task that the brain shuts down and things slip through the cracks. I've dedic

To be fair, IE introduced the first JavaScript profiler I had come across. The problem is the toolchain is locked at the time of the browser release. They need to have something periodically updated if the browser isn't going to update th

The admin interface sucks. Downloading software and getting your keys couldn't be much easier though. I haven't had to deal with the accounting end of it yet, so I can't speak to that.

AS far as browsers go, I think Opera innovates better than anyone. The speed dial interface you see in other browsers now was copied from them and poorly at that. Unified search & address bar appeared in Opera first (at least that's t

Standards-compliant seems to have taken on an odd shift. Most of the cool new stuff people want to use aren't in any published standard. They're draft specifications and implemented through browser vendor extensions. So, it's more like a

A BizSpark account will cost you $100 over the course of 3 years. You can get every OS they've released and run them on whatever you want. Yes, you'll have to spend time installing the OS, but Win 7 installs pretty quickly these days and

The maintenance contract is another $10 for the next year (assuming you're still < 5 people). And you get software updates during that period. It's not particularly devious.

I'm not refuting the value of documentation, I'm just acknowledging the referential integrity issues with it. All too frequently I've encountered cases where a config file gets updated but the wiki doesn't. Since all configuration files a

It's fairly common to annotate that data. While every entry in my postgresql.conf file is documented someplace, it'd be an absolute nightmare if defaults couldn't be commented inline or if I couldn't relay why a value is set to a particula

I bought the 15" Serval Pro (sp7). It weighs about the same as my 17" MBP did. So, same weight, but smaller screen. Naturally it's thicker. I went with the 15" because at the time of purchase that was the only one with a matte display o

While I concede this is a problem for those wanting to do mass hosting of SSL, I'd hardly say that's what's holding back the secure web. Way too many devs outright refuse to run on SSL in situations where it would work just fine. Some hav

I agree. The entire Internet would have you believe that OSS just didn't exist before the advent of git. I like git and prefer it, but SVN gets the job done. My only real gripe with SVN is it makes it harder for those without commit priv
