That works as long as you're adding code. But what about when you're deleting code? I absolutely want to know why you've removed something.

That's one interpretation. Another is you're looking at git log and it's all historical. The best practice bit seems to boil down to "because Linus said so." The rest of the git commit best practices seem to fall

I think that ship has sailed. Even Amazon offers heavy reserved instances, which are expected to be on 24/7 (you pay for every hour in the month even if you're not running a machine).

Calling everything beautiful diminishes the value of the word. And most apps posted to HN are described as beautiful. It's mostly just become filler text now. Worse, this judgment isn't coming from an impartial critic, but usua

I used to use Gmail and never could get search to work well in it. IIRC, it wouldn't even stem words properly. I hope that's changed since. Nowadays I use FastMail and its search is pretty good. But unlike Web search engines w

I went through the same process recently. I had mixed emotions about it, because I found a lot of correspondence that I'd have rather forgotten. I'm a different person than when I was in high school or college. I remember what

Maybe I'm just bad at email searching, but I've found having a large corpus just means my search results get severely diluted. If I have to recall exact phrases from emails to get meaningful results, then search has largely faile

Every year has more than 26 weeks ;-) But to your point, I suspect that's why a lot of companies have switched to semi-monthly payroll. It's always 24 pay periods but the pay date itself can shift.

The Boston Globe Magazine had a pretty good piece on them a few years back. It was far easier to read in print, but I think this the article: http://www.boston.com/bostonglobe/magazine/2011/0807/ Most o

I think it depends on how you go about it. If you just make it available and from the outset make it known that's what you're doing, then I think it's fair game. If, on the other hand, you spent time convincing people to us

I've been waiting for an API addition, that I had been personally assured by Chromium PM would go through, for 4.5 years. It's needed to support full canvas screenshot functionality in ChromeDriver, so it's not exactly a fri

There's a few of us at Oracle working on an alternative backend via JRuby, as well. Chris Seaton gave a talk on it at RubyConf last week. He has a series of posts about it that are pretty good: http://www.chrisseaton.com&#

By all means, quote away. Writing this was cathartic for me. If it helps others, even better.

I know this is going to seem like nitpicking, but most developers will never contribute to open source. Maybe most of the people you are immediately surrounded by do. But a lot of open source is written by a small subset of the population

This was a large part of why I decided not to. It took me 6 hours or so to realize that was the path I was heading down. But the end of the 14th hour, I was certain it was a bad call. Releasing something I know was broken and that everyo

Setting aside the licensing issues, and assuming it's just because I don't feel like dealing with obnoxious people, something still doesn't make sense to me. Prior to announcing the shutdown, no one had access to the source.

To be clear, since you made another snarky comment that you deleted, I did have paying customers and it was cash-flow positive. But, I couldn't hire a team on current revenues. And given I had bootstrapped a slow-and-steady business,

Awesome. I think I could have made this more likely by going more service-oriented from the outset. It was a Rails prototype app that kept growing. Eventually new stuff was service-oriented, but far too much was locked up in a monolithic

I was well aware of the licenses. I was optimizing for delivering value to my customers, not for the best way to give everything away should I go out of business. The world of licensing gets considerably more complicated once you decide t

Part of the purpose of my post was to paint a realistic picture of this process. I suspect much of what I ran into isn't an aberration. Creating a tarball and distributing it is a gross oversimplification of the process in many cases
