This was with the Gmail front-end. It's entirely possible there was just something messed up with my account. I haven't come across too many others that have had similar issues, but most people I know have much smaller accounts. T

I find myself in a minority on this one, but a big part of why I switched to FastMail is Gmail's search was always slow and typically insufficient for me. E.g., Gmail didn't (doesn't?) do stemming, meaning I needed to memoriz

It's been a long time since I gave up on FreeBSD on the desktop, but I think back in 2000 I had some bad problems with whatever SoundBlaster card I had (some Audigy thing) and ATi acceleration just wasn't going to happen. But othe

400 KB is a very aggressive target. I don't think anything in SubstrateVM would absolutely prohibit that, but currently our images are larger. Some of this is just simply a design trade-off. E.g., in JRuby+Truffle, we've implement

The tricky part with performance is it's often contextual. I didn't mention it, but I did verify the results by modifying redis-rb to remove the layers of blocks as well. Of course, it could have been something else, like how a pa

In this case we first moved to JRuby (after verifying a similar performance profile to MRI) and once on JRuby we used jedis [1]. I simplified the tale a bit -- apologies if I got your hopes up on MRI. [1] -- https://github.com&#x

FYI, when you're on a GitHub page you can press the 'y' key to have the URL changed to one that includes a particular blob reference. It helps prevent bit rot. Curently, your linked line doesn't point to the `ctpop` intr

Well, this is what I was referring to with the HA features of vSphere. It works basically like a compute level RAID. The VMs were stored on a SAN and vSphere monitored each of the compute blades. If one went down, the VMs were seamlessly mi

For my last start-up, I moved off EC2 to a dedicated vSphere cluster with a hosted provider. vSphere has an API, so adapting existing provisioning & deployment code was quite straightforward (I used the fog gem in Ruby). I basically tre

Your point is well-taken. Broken deploys are just the extreme case. You'd run into the same problem if two devs on the team just happened to install libraries at different times. One would get it, one would not. And you don't get

I've had deploys break because gems were removed from RubyGems.org. Using CI as a gate isn't sufficient because a gem can be removed in the window between a completed CI run and the deploy. Making it harder, generally if you have

You can use the maven polyglot plugin [1] to write your POM in something other than XML. It's fairly new, but it's there. We use it in JRuby to write our POMs in Ruby. As an example of a loop: https://github.com/jr

Agreed. It just seems far more pronounced in the Ruby ecosystem. My experience with Python and Java is that both communities are okay with maintaining multiple versions of a library. And when you commit to that, you adopt practices like sep

One of our stated goals is to run code is to run code without modification, including extensions. We have no intention of creating a third ecosystem. However, with Truffle's polyglot interface, someone certainly could write a JRuby+Tru
