Virtually no one does this. If their own laziness is enough of a hurdle for them to not bother, I'm fine with that.

That's a whole lot of "what ifs". I'd rather just block people that are consuming resources and potentially affecting service levels for actual customers (or people that will actually convert). The situation you paint mi

Interesting. I've always been attracted to the idea of the Volt, but having both an ICE and EV components struck me as worst of all worlds when it comes to maintenance. I take it you haven't found that to be the case? Do you have

FYI, what you've linked to is a breakdown for the licenses of various projects comprising GraalVM. The licenses you listed only apply apply to TruffleRuby. Having said that, Graal and its related projects are all open source, with a li

People routinely read text files larger than 1 KB into memory. HTTP responses are often larger than 1 KB. Serialized data (JSON, XML, etc.) is often larger than 1 KB.

If you can achieve the same rendered output much faster with a different runtime or with a rewrite or with a different framework, I don't think you're looking at a fundamental design flaw with the page. I'm happy to agree to

Doesn't basecamp do a ton of caching to achieve response times like that? There are certainly techniques to get there, but how long does it take to populate the caches? That's what you're going to see out of a stock Rails app

I don't think it's uncommon. But the point is it usually has little to do with load and isn't easily solved by scaling horizontally. Sure, you might be able to gain some efficiencies with distributed caches and such, but that

I don't think it's that much of an edge case. If Rails and its ecosystem lead to 300ms render times without load, but your objective is 100ms, you're going to have a problem. I don't think either number here is extreme a

It's a legitimate point to consider. I've set up my home router with Tomato by Shibby, which allows routing all traffic over a VPN link. I was finding the router couldn't keep up with a 50 Mbps link. Granted, these routers ar

Blender sorta did that. It was a closed source project that the authors said they would open source if the community raised €100,000. It succeeded and the software was subsequently made open source.
