Airbnb is a great company (I'm a user and like it a lot) but not a typical web startup. Take all YC startups and divide by number of employees, what's the average?

Let's say YC's most prominent success so far is Reddit (or choose Heroku, or whatever you prefer). How many jobs did it create?

Hello Reddit! :) (If I was American I'd probably vote for Democrats most of the time, but it's funny how users seem to know exactly what did or didn't cause the fall of the Eastern Bloc)

This is becoming an increasingly common mistake for tech CEOs: adopt Steve Jobs' attitude without being Steve Jobs.

What is a legal vs. illegal attack? Is there an authority that determines legality in this case? If it rules the attack is illegal, how is the attack prevented of the perpetrator punished? If we have all that what's up with Gaddafi or Myana

His worldview isn't binary. He's merely providing some perspective by pointing out the system has been similarly broken for a while and apparently startups have still been starting up all the while. As a non-American without Green Card, I s

I can understand Americans who move to places like Brazil or India in search of opportunity, but it's surprising to see central Europe as a destination. (I'm not American nor European, but live in NYC and worked in the EU). I doubt Germany,

But the US Is Bad, what don't you understand?! (Seriously, I was expecting some relativist argument, but this is not even that. I'm surprised there's no mention of obesity rates as well, while we're at it)

The NBA example is exactly what I meant. I'm not really referring to PG or YC specifically, more to the general attitude in the startup community: it's becoming increasingly becoming Hollywood-like, with founder profiles in Vanity Fair and

I wouldn't say easy, but there seems to be an underlying message that it is a deterministic, repeatable process - if you're willing to endure the stress, are smart and hard working you'll succeed - when in reality luck plays a pretty big pa

If "real programming language" advocates spent more time creating equivalient/better alternatives to projects like Drupal or Wordpress in their preferred environments, they'd advance their goals much more than any HN/Proggit comment could.

What's the deal with the negative comments? You basically get this feature as a gift. If you don't use it, you won't be affected by it in any way. If you do, you get to enjoy the author's labor for free. Where's the problem here? Any idiot

It's a very big deal for new projects, if it means Django will run out of the box. GAE is a pretty awesome platform for small projects, a clear migration path in/out will make it much more attractive for bigger projects.

I don't get the criticism. Actually seems like one of the most interesting YC startups yet, IMHO. A simple proposition for the user and the charity, and a simple revenue model built in.

For most OSS devs, the benefit is having a more interesting portfolio, especially skills they don't get to use in their day job. Wouldn't this work the same way for designers?

Consider the Air. At least the full-spec one ($1800) is fine for web dev (some Eclipse/XCode as well) and the form factor is unbeatable.

From what I understand, it's harder to actually sell on Android: there isn't (yet - Amazon are working on one) a store comparable to the App Store, and, perhaps related, the average user seems to be more reluctant to pay for apps.

I am not a US citizen, I don't see what TSA or US immigration officials' incompetence (which is certainly real) has to do with US politics - certainly not what it has to do with Hacker News.

No, you're actually right. The comment above links to a list of visa-waiver countries, whose citizens automatically get a 3-month (IIRC) visa on entry to the US. Tourist visas are NOT limited to these nations, it just means that if you're f
