Very cool. Great use of GAE's quick deployment/scalability. I assume this is based on a general purpose people finder app?

I think OP means an outdoor space as part of the office, eg a wifi enabled roof garden/patio where you can take a break or even bring a laptop and work. Highly recommended.

Perhaps the issue here is leading by example vs by authority. Leading by authority alone doesn't scale. Even in places like the military where leaders have almost unlimited power, relying solely on authority is seen as poor leadership. Eith

I sincerely apologize if you took this as ad hominem. I honestly didn't mean it that way. FWIW, I've been living in the US for the past 3 years but I'm not American and neither is my wife - and our couch is far too small to sleep on (we do

I'm guessing you're not married? (EDIT: I hope this isn't coming off as some '50s "take my wife" routine. My point is that marriage isn't about authority, it's about partnership)

I can't believe this only gets 3 points in HN. Perhaps try adding some reference to Jason Calcanis in the title.

Or at least shut down their website - and, obviously, their even more wasteful print edition.

%99 of the time, Joel-style posts about programming in general are a boring rehash of ideas already expressed better before (often by Joel himself). Same goes for "10 things every start up should know" etc. They're great for HN karma, poor

I've read in another report that some of these systems' controls are already modeled after PlayStation/etc - this way they get to build on game manufacturer's years of usability testing as well as make it easier for recruits to learn to use

Perhaps one outcome of nuclear power (and other developments) is that the main conflicts now are not nation vs. nation but nation vs. network - and in that division it's only the nations that hold nuclear power, so far. I doubt networks wil

My point is that it was never (or rarely) mentioned as such in HN prior to Jobs' comments... Generally I don't think any company is more or less evil than any other. Most publicly traded companies pretty much do whatever they can get away w

Reading the recent "Adobe Bad" threads is like watching HN lose brain cells. Having owned only Mac/Linux hardware for the past 10 years I have my share of Adobe frustrations, but all this bandwagon jumping after Jobs made a few comments is

No sarcasm font, but I hope everyone gets the point. EDIT: it wasn't meant as a serious guide, but reading the comments I understand it might be taken as such, so added a link to the real instructions now.

I think that's pretty unfair. Wordpress didn't just magically "Become massively popular", it got so because it served many people's needs (there were plenty of alternative free/OSS blogging engines all along). Its developers put in thousand

I realize we're nitpicking, but I don't really get it: Why isn't it predictable (in the sense that any execution time for an HTTP request ever is)? You run http_load for x seconds and see how many requests got served, then make change y and
