You've missed out the rotational modes, which matter hugely. A fraction of a degree on a long telephoto lens is a huge part of the frame. (If you're focusing at infinity the translational modes theoretically shouldn't matter

A network of these, with logging of historical data, would very possibly have helped with MH370 / Air France 447 etc. If they can maintain coverage of most of the oceans, this'll be an incredibly useful tool for future lost flight

This is beautiful. By using Netflix's actual CDN and requesting actual video files over HTTP, they're preventing ISPs from whitelisting fast.com without also whitelisting Netflix itself. Of course there'll be a game of cat-

Gatwick does a similar thing, but has opted to use 'anonymous' face recognition with a whole array of cameras [1]. By all accounts it's worked reasonably well, but this is coming from the manufacturer and/or Gatwick itse

It depends who your users are and what needs they have. Our users are mostly MATLAB/Python users, pretty tech-savvy, and being able to edit individual bits of the dataset with other applications or write their own code to analyse them

This is a double-edged sword. For our (reasonably savvy) users, being able to duplicate and easily modify individual datasets/files is a feature, not a bug: people can symlink the contents of an entire folder but modify a single array

It all depends what your aims are. We have a well-defined set of data we need to keep, including intermediate processing steps. We don't need headers, structured arrays, or any weird esoteric object types. (The author is my colleague.)

The author (my colleague, and probably the most talented developer I know) isn't replacing HDF5 with a 'proprietary binary format': in fact, the transition is as simple as replacing "HDF5 group" with "folder in

Or perhaps do it the other way around? Make a Let's Encrypt subdomain-blacklisting TXT record with which the parent domain could indicate that they don't want subdomain owners to be able to create their own SSL certificates. (Usef

Am I the only one who can't read this on an iPhone without instantly being redirected to a mandatory app download page? I don't seem to have the option to close or hide it or go back to the article.

Did you get the cash and options the wrong way round in your example ($100k + 5000 options / $110k + 3000 options)? That bit confused me for a while. Or maybe I'm missing something about how they work!

Side-note: a lot of fresh chicken will smell bad for about 5 minutes when you remove it from a vacuum-sealed package, but the smell quickly dissipates and the chicken is good to eat. In the UK there's a label on some brands of fresh ch

FWIW, I'm in the UK and initial backup was great and fast (on a 1Gbps upload connection, I was getting maybe 10-15MBps upload consistently, which isn't bad considering it's across the Atlantic!). The biggest thing for this ha
