What about printing? Does canvas maintain resolution independence like SVG? ... I.e., can you print your beautifully drawn graphs and expect to get quality output?

Even if they do want to get into chip design (low power chips -- the area where PA semi excelled) they may expose themselves to patent suits if they directly compete with Apple in the handheld market. Not saying they cannot avoid it, but in

At first I was very skeptical. Who needs another blogging platform (tumblr works fine, thank you). But now that I'm on the road, Posterous does have one big advantage: It works offline too. I use Mail.app to write and when I finally get a

Someone once gave an example of a 'preview' feature on the client side (like preview the formatting of blog comments) -- then the same code is used on the server to generate the actual view. I think this was briancarper.net where - since he

Well written. Includes a section on "deployment" at the end that summarizes various options -- including patches needed to get FastCGI working. Specific instructions on how to deploy on dreamhost shared accounts (Passanger / fastcgi).

Maintaining stuff most people don't use is an unnecessary headache. Yes it works today but what if some future gmail feature breaks it? I'm pretty sure even Labs go through some sort of QA process.

Most of these are SMP machines (and probably multicore chips) so you probably have >1 core per employee... Most of these are probably running engineering tools: simulations, verification, silicon back-end tools. Current chips require to

The author claims he prefer having the application/OS hide the classic filesystem hierarchy from users (he presents the iPhone OS as an example). While the idea works for a small number of 'files' (or documents), it does not scale well. Whe

HLVM is targeted at high performance scientific applications. The current implementation already outperforms OCaml in several benchmarks (OCaml is more optimized for symbolic computations and sometimes 'boxes' floating point values).

I use google reader and I have noticed only new shared items on Buzz posts. I.e., it did not automatically 'publish' old stuff I have shared. Seems OK with me. In fact, I kind of like it. Only complaints I have are: 1. Missing tagging fun

The iPad/iPhone helps with one aspect of the problem: There is only one platform to handle. No need to support broken old browsers. [by the way - I haven't seen any statistics but it seems Apple users are more likely to update their OS/Apps

Are there any HN-like sites (news aggregators?) for science news? Tried Reddit/r/science but there isn't much traffic there. [I know finance is more sexy these days. Call me old-fashioned but I still believe in basic science ]

What is usually missing from these articles is even a simplified error analysis. We can all count the floating-point operations, and today caches sometimes influence matrix algorithms more than raw flop counts. The problem gets more intere

One more problem: Patents. GSM implementations require licensing IP from several major manufacturers (Nokia, Ericsson and others). As long as the project is small they probably won't bother. But just try basing a femtocell product on OpenBT

I don't think Walter suggested having the array size part of the type (static array types). He suggested using "fat pointers" -- pointers along with their extent. This is similar to how many Pascal compilers treat the type "String". Kernigh

Not only running. Maximizing one's endurance takes years. Of course there are other factors that affect performance and deteriorate over the years (Force for example) -- which is why endurance athletes peak at their 30ths.
