For what it's worth, I disagree quite strongly with that review. The book is aimed at those with a pretty mature appetite for abstract mathematical reasoning, but not much specific knowledge in the areas of statistics, machine learning

Surely you're not trying to manage 40+ people yourself. Your "team" is actually a division or sub-organization that should have a number of managers or leads within it. You are not a manager but a director/VP. Your actua

Why is this such a bad thing, though? That's the critical part missing from your post. It seems to me that the idea is to replace unethical opt-out ads with ethical opt-in ads that don't track you. Besides that, Brave is a browser

Was Flooz a browser or just a digital currency? 1999 was a very different time as well for the internet. In particular, ads and trackers were not even remotely as pervasive and invasive.

I view these serverless cloud offerings as more of a business/staffing decision than an engineering one. It may not be less work overall, but it tends to outsource traditional ops work and replace it with work that ordinary developers

Is there really such a thing as culture-less food? The fact that Taco Bell, for instance, has struggled so much in some international markets suggests there might be a stronger cultural element to it than you’re giving it credit for. Yes, i

It depends on how the word is used. "You guys" is very different, for instance, than just "guys". As it happens, that's the usage in the title of this thread. I'm not saying there's no reason to reconsider

This is definitely a bit niche, but at first blush it's highly bizarre that you can get a natural cross product operation in three dimensions... and not again until seven. And then never again after that. It's a peculiar and inter

Is there any work being done to get it working again? More broadly, is there any way to know what is actually being worked on with Elm? The language is amazing but it feels left for dead sometimes. Yet there seems to be a decent amount of a

I can't imagine an experienced data scientist at Facebook is only making $135k in total. I'd double or triple that for experienced senior engineers (including non-cash compensation like RSUs, etc.).

Everything I've read indicates that you do still have to do the normal in-person technical interview gauntlet at each individual company. It's possible things have changed recently, though.

I run a team deploying machine learning systems in production, and I agree with most of this. None of us have a formal background in machine learning, and none of us have PhDs. We all came from traditional software engineering backgrounds,

There's less to delegate if you're a team lead with IC direct reports. The situation starts becoming a lot more complex when your reports are themselves managers or team leads.

I completely agree with this. It's actually hard to delegate too much. Almost all managers I've ever known have delegated too little. I think they're afraid that by delegating important parts of their job they're diminis

To be honest, 10-12 just sounds more like a small open office to me rather than a shared team space. When I think of a shared office, I think of maybe 2-4 people in a spacious private office. Even at 5 people you'd start to lose the be

Presumably this service is not going to be free, and the overall cost for someone who plays a lot of games would probably be similar to just getting a $1000+ PC and using it for 3-4 years. Of course maybe the pricing will prove me wrong.
