Great analysis, I'm glad I live in a world where everyone eats just enough to maintain their minimal weight and uses 100% of the food they obtain with no waste.

You can turn all the auto updates off if you have windows pro and above. I cant say ubuntu is immune for example, I've booted into a rarely used ubuntu installation on my laptop before and wanted to test something, and apt was locked d

Interesting to know how it works - a variac is used to manually control motor speed, I guess maybe the C=64 has a speed and vibration sensor somehow.

For me its over engineered stuff that makes things more convoluted, for example old school system processes just wrote into /var/log, so you could do `egrep blah *` and search for text in logs, now you have to mess around trying t

no sure about the US, but where I live that green paint actually has bits of ground up glass and other stuff in it for friction, its sparkly when you shine light on it.

Its often more nuanced than that, for example often cafes will get free machines and service if they agree to only use a particular brand of beans. Great for the cafe owner, but typically its mediocre beans like vittoria or similar which ar

Yep that could certainly work if appliances and cars have an option to say "have my dishwasher finish or car charged by 9am tomorrow" and it knows how long a cycle takes and picks the best time. For anything real time it wont work

Virtue signalling is typically something easy with no real inconvenience to the person doing it. So doing a #supportsoupkitchens on a twitter repost vs actually going and volunteering at one.

Or get a plug in hybrid that results in the convenience of one car but most of the environmental/cost benefits.

Its funny, cassette nostalgia seems pretty absurd for anyone like me who was around during that era. I understand Vinyl nostalgia because they have the nice artwork and they were typically better mastered than equivalent CDs, but cassettes

Was a bit of an old ball format - required specific tapes, and decks were only backwards compatible to play legacy analogue tapes not record onto them. That plus the copy protection limited its adoption I think.

I've always bought grey market Samsung phones for that reason - they are the same spec as the local variants but with dual physical SIM enabled.

Yeah its probably a half rose coloured glasses and half the era and implementation of deskphone. I had an pre-voip Avaya phone with 24 speed dials - for each contact it had a red/green LED next to the speed dial button that showed if t

The UK office felt like it could have been a genuine documentary vs the American version which felt more like a sit com. Not sure how you can find this bleak and dull: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p6Eaz-1_3iA

I ended up making a script to set custom audio devices back to what I want. Its peak elegance, have to kill teams, modify a json file with some cryptic uuid reference to the speaker and mic device, then restart teams.

I love the realistic perfectly lit nice bokeh stock art portrait photos in their sales page 9 quadrant chat demo. Can imagine the disappointment in real world use with grainy, poorly lit, blurry webcam images of normal people.

It probably also depends what you are used to. Younger people have only ever used bloated laggy stuff like teams and don't know any better. I miss the days of just having a dedicated desk phone - it rings, you answer, and talk instantl

Maybe its regional, but for the last 4 weeks me and every coworker has a 50% call connect failure rate. Join a meeting or call, it sits there for about 15 seconds then throws an error. Second connect works OK.

Its not decent, its usable. Decent would be able to switch chat tabs in under a second, reliable quoting (one minute ``` works, next minute it doesn't), an unread messages view like slack, and overall not being a laggy piece of crap. I

And its not a revenue generator if size is smaller - most customers wouldn't know how to determine the app size and wouldn't know what it means even if they saw its size.

Worth nothing that Morgan Stanley essentially acquired Smith Barney a few years before this issue, so likely procedures were not synced up or ignored due to the integration work going on.
