In my experience, everyone's setup is slightly different so it's hard to find a generic solution. pgcopydb is pretty good I can't remember the name but I saw a Ruby based tool on Hacker News a few months ago that'd autom

Lots of embedded systems like routers run read only although maybe they're not technically ROM. Usually they mount the root filesystems read only and create some small ram disk/tempfs for logs. Persistent settings go to a small NV

Yeah, I think it's not just limited to CI. I think flakey/slow/expensive CI is also an orange/red flag you're lacking in developer experience/productivity. When it gets too bad, it starts once incentivizing eve

The ulterior motive is compromised accounts and the support needed to deal with them is a tremendous waste of time and a liability. Switching to hardware backed authentication reduces risk and support. Face/touch/PIN are an additi

How is a Yubikey any different than other physical keys people have been carrying for hundreds of years? It seems much more intuitive to carry a digital key for your digital accounts. Password managers have the added complexity of still nee

The technically savvy do. The others don't but not because they don't want to--they don't know they exist. Everyone I know carries around NFC devices--either work badges or credit cards. I don't see how having an extra N

Do you have a source for this? As far as I know, it's at best a legal gray area. I believe in most cases you'll still be held in contempt of court for not producing secrets needed to access information which the authorities have a

I'm curious if that's really true. I've had a Yubikey in my keyring for years and it's pretty convenient. It's smaller than my car key and isn't very noticeable. I have the NFC enabled variant so it can be used

Maybe I misunderstood, is this skipping boot as well? I was thinking the VM would still follow the normal boot process (in which case you can reset cloud init before powering down)

I don't mind passkeys and Bitwarden will take care of them for me. I enrolled most important stuff with hardware tokens and it's the same services now offering passkeys so I haven't migrated but probably eventually will. Micr

I imagine a peer to peer scheme could also work. All nodes are control plane and data plane and advertise/broadcast to other nodes (similar to how network routing tables are distributed) That'd be a pretty big architectural change

Yeah, I like the "if you can't do math on it, it probably shouldn't be a numeric data type" rule of thumb i.e. applying an average to a list of credit card numbers doesn't make any sense nor does adding commas

I think this is much less straight forward when the OSS is glued to a commercial company. Giving money to a competitor is different than giving money to an open initiative. Does Redis Labs give back to the Linux Foundation and OpenSSL?

I care about getting things done but don't want to take on the risk of an encumbered license and the volatility that comes with license changes. To me, these products are booby traps that are more likely to need replaced in the future
