Having been on the receiving end of this little downvote coalition for daring to state facts about the Fukushima Daiichi and Daini sites, I can confirm that this is an oddly hot-button issue on HN.

My maybe-controversial view is that peace and the removal of the US protection racket are consistent aims, and the constitutional changes are not necessarily a precursor to Japanese aggression. Still, regular people in Japan seem to be most

Well, Abe and LDP are generally all the way in on Nippon Kaigi and they supported his abdication. The first news I heard of it was Abe’s appeal to the nation to allow the Emperor to step down.

I mean he basically begged to be fired, so it’s probably not all that much fun. They sacrifice any semblance of normalcy and have an endless calendar of ceremonies and events. Emperor Akihito acquitted himself pretty well in the job, and mo

I agree and three other spectacular locations leap to mind: the Imperial Palace in Kyoto, Kenrokuen in Kanazawa, and the most spectacular of all — Ise Jingū.

I pay ~4.5% on my mortgage and ~US$20k in property taxes. It’s all relative, I guess! Curious: your tax is 1.7% of what? Fair market value? Some official valuation?

Taxes and loans are cheap in Japan. Anyone with even a modest income in the US should have no problem carrying two homes in Japan.

What you’re describing is a cartel under competition laws. It would be hard to prove that Apple and Google are conspiring together against other market players.

My take: Panasonic is moving its chips from Tesla to Toyota/Mazda and betting the incumbent Japanese makers will be better positioned to capitalize on EV sales over the long term. It’s not strange for a 100+ year old company playing th

Scrubbing passwords and other sensitive information from logs is such a basic requirement. It’s something you write a regression test for and never think about again.

No, I also like it. I’m not saying the complaints are unfounded, but they’re not my issues. I broke the command key after about a year of heavy use, but it took about five minutes at an Apple Store to have it replaced. I’ve broken keys on e

It’s a false conclusion. The OP is making a moral/ethical statement, and says that prison time is the only way to motivate the wrongdoers to conform. That’s different than asserting that a crime under current laws has taken place.

I recommend the Nova episode about the 3/11 incident, which is streaming on Amazon Prime. Also, lots of sources online discuss the machinations behind the press conferences: http://world.time.com/2012/02/29&#x

Is that what this downvoting bloc is about? Very odd and misplaced, since I have no bias whatsoever against nuclear power. I’m stating facts about the response to the Fukushima Daiichi and Daini incidents. Here’s another little known fact:

Yes. Not sure why I’m being downvoted. There is no question that if the spare/spent fuel were exposed to air, the resulting radiation would have required evacuation of a 150+ mile radius. They originally brought in an elite firefightin

It’s also worth noting that the cooling pool is not inside the protective container that houses the cores. As such, if the water were to drain off these pools, it would possibly render Tokyo uninhabitable for a very long time. That danger w

Lots of drama here, but the real problem was obvious from the start: no path to making money. They literally gave it away daily. Anyone with half a brain could see where this was headed.

Toyota and Panasonic announced a battery tech partnership in January. They also partnered with Mazda and licensed all their EV patents. If you follow them closely in JDM, they have lots of EV concept vehicles in play.
