I saw a Japanese TV show about the story of his discovery of the G-Shock design. It embodies everything good and bad about Japanese business culture. Great story! https://www.gshock.com/technology/story

Some of Google’s biggest ad customers are OTAs. That explains a lot about their moves (or failure to move) in the travel space.

Wasn’t the question about cash versus bonds—not equities versus bonds? Honest question: What advantages do bonds with negative rates have over cash with low positive rates? Do bonds protect against inflation?

In Japan, it’s common to see politicians, business people, or celebrities lose their entire livelihood and reputation over crimes such as mistakes in accounting for business lunches amounting to a few hundred dollars, or possession of a few

Every bike in Japan needs to registered with the police. Also, there are very specific rules governing abandoned property. Just saying “well no one else was using it” isn’t proof of the absence of a crime. Edit: moreover, this is a well kno

Japan polices itself so that the police generally don’t have to. I don’t know about Norway, so I won’t comment. I can tell you it’s easy to avoid trouble with the state in Japan. Your biggest worry is going to be an older person who enforce

As a fellow gaijin in Japan, you seem like you’ve learned nothing about living here. The whole tone of your story is so smug and obnoxious. The reason that even minor crimes (stealing a bicycle) are taken seriously is that letting small thi

This is the first of many forays to come by the US government to outsource identity management to Facebook. It’s coming, whether you like it or not.

Juries probably don’t have a predisposition to either party in this case. If anything, they’re more likely to get bored and confused than a judge or arbitrator. This seems like the wrong thing to get upset about.

If my time in Japan has taught me anything, it’s to get under something. The big danger is stuff nearby toppling onto you and immobilizing you. Bookshelves, wardrobes, floating cabinets, drop ceilings, and such can hurt you unless you pop u

As a Seven & I shareholder, things have been going poorly for a while now. It’s a shame because this company has a chance to be truly great. Luckily, I hedged on FamilyMart, too.

I’d say it’s mostly a form of complaining that traffic isn’t moving, even when the people in front are also stuck. It’s truly pointless noise-making.

I notice that the bike messengers in the city now have “horns” that are more like an electric beep that is not as loud as a car. Also, the police cars have rumblers that you feel more than hear. When I’m in NYC, I always wish there was a co

It’s more along the lines of a discretionary override when strict application of the law would offend the judge’s interpretation of fairness. It used to be the King’s privilege, and later became a judicial power.

The whole concept of equity at law is contrary to what you described. In legal systems descended from English tradition, fairness trumps codified or common law.

My friend became a cab driver in his 50s after he got laid off from his career. It’s not an easy gig. Their pride of service is definitely not unique in Japan, but is when compared to other cabbies elsewhere.
