Most modern Japanese homes are not "western style" at all. They're usually built by large industrial concerns (e.g., Toyota, Sekisui, etc.) that prefabricate many components at scale. The process of building such a home in Ja

> Tension joints for wood are seen in classic Japanese construction Japan also has several wooden buildings that purport to be 1,000+ years old—although these situations inevitably lead to Ship of Theseus debates.

Thanks, anyways. Ironic that they effectively "censored" my comment rather than engage with it. Prompts a few thoughts for me: (1) coming to HN is like time-traveling ~10 years back, (2) HN today reminds of the late stages of afte

You reach for Web3 when your requirements include: (a) self-sovereign ID/auth, and/or (b) hosted materials that can't be censored via a centralized hosting provider. Horses for courses. ps. Does he think Web3 is about storing

Not surprising, but sort of disappointing that the writer thinks that modern Japanese culture so heavily defined by its interactions with the West, esp. from WWII. It's not that it's untrue or incorrect, it's just that Japan

You’re measuring everything in dollars. But there are already economies that exist outside the realm of dollars. And who says the future belongs to the US dollar? In fact, historical reserve currency cycles strongly suggest otherwise, not t

The “flounce” is a well-known feature of every online message board that ever existed. The loud, performative exit...usually followed by a shameful return after a few weeks of withdrawal. I’ve been watching people do it since the late 1990s

Probably anything out of the ordinary would work. In Japan, the equivalent of ice cream truck is the stone-roasted sweet potato truck. They use a strange chant that never fails to get my attention: https://www.youtube.com/wa

From my perspective (Japan), every news article in US news outlets paired the Takata defect with Honda. I'm aware that everyone uses Takata, so it struck me as a coordinated effort to smear a foreign maker. Detroit has shown its willin

I think you’re right. Honda isn’t even very popular in Japan. Distant second place behind Toyota, I think. Their mindshare here seems even less. When I lived in America, Honda was much more of a trusted brand there. Detroit went after them

Another theory (mine, as a TikTok user in Asia) is that American TikTok is not worth much compared to the rest of the app’s ecosystem, and therefore being “forced” to sell it is a windfall exit opportunity for Bytedance.

That’s putting a lot of trust in the doorman. Having lived in doorman buildings in Manhattan for a long time, I definitely considered the building staff as much (or more) of a security risk as any outsiders.

The Finder in particular has been neglected for so long. Many of these “features” are artifacts that are indicative of a long-standing need to rethink the Mac OS user’s relationship to the file system. The problem is that Apple’s instinct i

Actually, it’s more nuanced than that. GDPR applies anywhere if you offer a service in the EU or monitor EU subjects’ behavior in the EU. (PDF link) https://edpb.europa.eu/sites/edpb/files/files/file1

The current Nozomi Shinkansen is about $130 each way from Osaka to Tokyo. Not out of reach for a few meetings per month, but a big stretch for a daily salaryman commute. I haven’t seen any pricing for the Linear yet.
