Is this really considered obscure? I'm pretty sure I read about it in a Nolo book on small business. Anyway, be aware this applies to shareholders. Having an option to buy shares is not the same thing.

I really appreciate this article. It feels like envy has become a major driver over the last few years in the US--it's obviously always been around, but now it feels like both an obsession and something that is broadly socially accep

Exactly. The article is an exercise in optimizing for the wrong metric.

I'm not sure this is true. Many decisions you make today can be changed/fixed-up later. The company I'm at started as a WA LLC before re-incorporating as a Delaware C-corp and taking a $9.2M A-round. Bit of cost and hassle

The bankruptcy prohibition is why you even see loans in the single digits. You have a typical 18 year old with zero credit history and zero real income. You have a loan that may take many years to repay, but unlike a mortgage there is no h

If you honestly believe this premise of risk-free profits, then why not toss your life savings into a residential leasing firm? An example stock is Equity Residential (stock EQR). Easy way to put money where mouth is. (For the record, I do

It's really sad that the author feels the need to be so defensive. Apparently the idea that ancient Europeans, "Oldest Dead White European Males", had a massive contribution to culture is somehow considered wrong and offensiv

For the NLTK idea, I think you can get a long way by adapting one of the examples from the (free) book: http://www.nltk.org/book_1ed/ Raft is conceptually deep, but code wise isn't actually that hard to do. Howev

Consider doing some language processing using the excellent NLTK library: http://www.nltk.org/ It wasn't on the lists of "wants", but implementing the Raft consensus protocol could be neat too. It was design

If the impact of global warming is significantly smaller than predicted and the human-induced contribution to that reduced warming is also much smaller than claimed, then expensive "green" policies indeed need to be reevaluated.

At a minimum, you should use at least two availability zones if you care about high-availability on AWS. The vast majority of issues (including the current EBS hiccup) tend to be limited to one AZ. For us, today's outage triggered a b

I think part of the issue why so many people have gone with Hive is that good, production-ready column stores are expensive. Redshift is posed to change that. If you're shopping in this space, Infobright is also worth checking out. And e

Comparing Redshift against Hadoop+Hive is reasonable. As you pointed out... the technologies are very different. However, there is a large overlap in use cases.

I don't see your python code defining a distribution or sort key for Redshift which is an important design consideration. (For my own use case of log analysis, I sort on datetime and use an "even" distribution). Also doesn't look like you

So should you be allowed to have any overnight guests in your home? These same arguments apply to family and friends coming for a visit and crashing at your place. Or to a kid's sleep-over for that matter.
