Yes, Maven sucks, but for large projects the dependency management is rather nice. Java as a language is terribly dependency crazy, and being able to add three lines to your pom and get a new library in along with all its dependencies is a

Are you pitting XML against Protocol Buffers? Because they are completely different things. Being self describing is a big deal.. it makes interchange far far easier and obvious. As does being human readable, debugging a web API in a bro

XML wasn't really ever made to be high performance though. It was made to be easy to read for humans and relatively easy to generate. At those two things it is awesome. If you are sticking binary data in XML and passing it over the wire

I think it is a bit premature to call it a failure. I think there is far too much focus on the hardware going on. The fact is that OLPC is actually doing some pretty good work. Yes, the hardware is more expensive than they had hoped, but

They are 'available' in the store: < http://www.cherrypal.com/openstore/product_info.php?products... ; Though I don't think I'd trust it. If they can actually afford to sell them for $99 it is actually kind of a neat product just from

Ya, I think there are definitely cases where it becomes very burdensome to use a NoSQL setup. Certainly anything where you are wanting to do analysis in the DB doesn't work very well. In your particular case I guess you'd have to do two qu

Can you give me an example of what you are thinking about? There's is no doubt SimpleDB especially can be a bit odd, it kind of forces you to create your own munged columns if you are doing queries across fields etc, but I've yet to run acr

Although it is sometimes hard to make work in all cases, I've recently moved a big project from MySQL to a Amazon's SimpleDB and S3 and it has turned out awesome. You have to design the system from the ground up to deal with the 'eventual
