Except this is not a standards issue. It is a problem that can be solved in one sentence only if the programmer groks code construction to begin with. A lot of otherwise smart programmers - some of them very experienced - do not understan

I personally would count that against any candidate during an interview. I wouldn't necessarily reject them, but I would definitely count that against them. I work in Toronto, Ontario. English is not my native language, but I always do my

I fully agree that Micosoft has been neglecting their core competencies lately, but I think they should expand into other markets, only they should be a lot smarter about it. I do not understand ther obsession with the strategy tax and the

I think it is still too early to say that. Microsoft has yet to recoup the money they invested in the Xbox, and they probably won't anytime soon. And while they are still ahead of Sony in the console race, the PS3 has picked up quite a bit

Have you listened to the StackOverflow podcasts? I give Jeff a lot of credit for leading a the SO dev team, but he has shown several times on the podcast that he can be very clueless (for example podcast #48 where they discuss localization)

I think they left Microsoft because they wanted to make games at their own pace (they must have crunched like crazy to get Halo 1, 2 and 3 out the door), own the games they create, and reach as broad a customer base as possible (i.e. releas

I don't think the book encourages this. There are several instances where it concedes that consistency should take precedence over using the "bestest" practice for example. Also, the dogmatic manager will be dogmatic regardless of the book

""Do X, Y, and Z and your code will improve" is something only managers believe" The thing is, it is absolutely correct for some definitions of X, Y and Z. There are plenty of programmers in the workplace who just suck at constructing code.

The out-of-control prices comment is not ridiculous. I also think people probably don't save as much as they should for a down payment (and not just in Vancouver), but even if they did it is hard to look at home prices in Canada and not thi

Unless you can prove the existence of a Jesus who has been resurrected, a Moses who walked on the sea or a Muhamad who rode a flying horse to Heaven, I doubt your proof would satisfy most people.

I am not Joel's biggest fan, but sometimes I feel that his detractors choose not to put his writing in context and only criticize him to create link bait. Joel was writing about an interview of Jamie Zawinski. Joel and jwz are of the same g

The good engineer should not be doing bleeding-edge work so much as he should be doing things that are challenging even in small ways every now and then, and rewarded for his efforts. I once worked at a small place that has a really, really

It is impossible to answer this question without knowing what kind of index fund you are investing in ("large, broad index fund" does not say much). For example, if you buy an S&P 500 index fund, you are not indexing the stock market.

Microsoft is ahead of Sony in the console race right now, but I think that Sony will end up leading the current generation. The Wii novelty will fade, and the PS3 will ultimately dominate thanks to a deeper line up of exclusive titles. I ha
