The now defunct (pretty sure) Peacock Data Inc. used to sell (~$300) a data set of names including spelling variations and their strength of relationship to other names. It included nicknames, variations across languages (e.g. "john&qu

I prefer the approach of LINQ expressions over LINQ method chains, but in C# very few LINQ operators are exposed to the LINQ expression syntax. So if you start with expressions you often end up with a terrible hybrid of both.

I call it the Windows control fractal. Each new version of Windows requires clicking through a totally new UI layer to get to the previous version's control panel. Finally you arrive at the Windows 95 settings program you were trying t

I usually see it in a retro-futurist parallel universe. Depending on the definition of "literature", Wild Wild West was a movie set in The Old West, but exhibits technologies that definitely didn't exist at the time. Those te

Have you checked out the LINQ expression support in F#? They cover all (I'm pretty sure) LINQ operators within an expression style (AKA not the method-call syntax).

To me, the glaring deficit in RxJS is that it doesn't have an observable collection. The convention to approximate it is `Observable<Foo[]>` which just pushes a whole array change. .NET's ObservableCollection<T> is an

But all farms are not even close to equal. Generally there are two categories of farms. There are small family-type farms where livestock live quite a good, cared-for life. Then there are enormous factory farms where an animals life is, in

Unfortunately Apple seems to have taken a couple steps back from supporting good ad-blocking tools. They forced AdGuard to cripple their iOS app to only allow DNS-based blocking instead of the superior local VPN blocking.

Thank you for mentioning this! I've been pondering this kind of fiber+thread design for a few days and it's nice to have some validation of the idea since I didn't know of any similar designs.

I was going for the smallest amount of hydrogen that would form a star. I suppose the joke would be improved if I used a number measuring the Sun's initial hydrogen content. I suppose that's why I'm not a comedian :P

What if we made a really really huge one? I'm talking 15 × 10^28 kg worth of hydrogen. At that size it would start and maintain itself. We could place it far enough away that we could harness its output safely here on earth with solar

That's what exceptions are for. They are a tool that _can_ be used to cut down on noise in code. Being clear and explicit about everything will leave your code looking like an implementation of the STL. The art of programming is partly
