Spam is not an accurate word, in fact it's pretty harmful. The title of many of the posts on HN have little to do with the actual content, this is not uncommon. Check out some of the tc posts.

There is a whole branch of philosophy that deals with this: aesthetics. There is a gentleman called Theodor Adorno, and he wrote some very interesting coverage of the area, and influenced a number of important aestheticians. Definitely wort

I think I have mentioned this before, but an excellent guide to advertising copy can be found in: David Ogilvy's Confessions of an Advertising Man (ISBN 1-904915-01-9). It's considered a seminal text among copy writers. I found it very help

I think I agree with you, there are huge open source projects that may not have had a business model to start with, but companies paid $bns to own them (think databases).
