There are also no studies on whether parachutes prevent death when falling from the sky[1], but I'm sure as shit still wearing one when I jump out of a plane! [1] http://www.bmj.com/content/327/7429/1459.

What about "this was never a good idea." Can't remember where I read this, but biometrics are a username, not a password!

Indeed, one need look no further than Slashdot to see this in action. 100% community moderation produced a comment section that is all confirmation and no information.

This is a lot of fuss over nothing. Of course there will be an adapter. Maybe not the most elegant thing in the world, but it's not as though millions of headphones are suddenly going to become useless.

I remember when Microsoft was on trial for abusing its monopoly, they ran ads with Bill Gates saying they needed to be able to "innovate"—a euphemism for their famous tactic of embrace, extend, and extinguish. Funny to see people

Yes, but the likelihood of mistyping them would be far less. 'f' and 'r' are right next to each other. 'Falling' and 'Rising' are a bit harder to unnoticeably fat-finger.

I've been addicted to benzos (since recovered) and know many others who have been too, so I'm intimately aware of their addictive nature and rapid tolerance. Saying they "destroy" judgment is a bit hyperbolic though. In

No one takes four different benzos at once unless they've got a specific outcome in mind.

You can't, but it doesn't matter. They state that the curb runs perpendicular to the fault. No matter which way you rotate it, the "east" side is being pulled south.

"…the eastern half of the curb got pulled north, while the other side got pulled south." Is that right? The picture seems to show the opposite, and I thought the Pacific Plate was sliding north, relative to the American Plate.

Yes, in California a judge can allow a plea to be withdrawn if it "serves the interests of justice." This is the same mechanism used to expunge someone's record after, e.g., completing probation. They are required to set as

This article was a little confusing for me. When I read "consciousness," I think of private, subjective experience—qualia. This meaning of consciousness is a very hard problem indeed, and any new theory is bound to be interesting.

It's the correct legal analysis, sure, but does it encourage considerate behavior? Does it help or hurt the goals behind zoning laws and traffic engineering? I think it's one-sided to write the whole problem off this way.

So many people did this at one company I worked for that it became something of a joke for low-level employees to say they were "staying on as an advisor" when they left.
