Valve is estimated to make $16.2 billion from Steam alone in 2025 [0], and CS:GO loot boxes only netted them ~1bn in 2023 [1] (and CS:GO player count is only slightly higher now compared to 2023, so I expected the income number is similar).

I am indifferent to having/not having a government ID. But I just find it incredibly stupid for the government to introduce it now given the current political atmosphere.

Food production is heavily supported by the government in China in order to keep food affordable. Food price is also incredibly low in China. If that's failing that the Western world is in hell now.

and that's why Gabe's wealth is "only" 10 billion not 100 billion. The problem is many CEOs will look at what Gabe has and think "I want more than him".

I think that's right, there is no better way than just adding barriers. On Apple hardware it can probably make use of the special memory ordering mode, but on normal ARM64 there's probably nothing it can do.

Well, it's kind of a new thing, isn't it. Just like the deck popularized the idea of "handheld PCs". Maybe the Machine will do the same to "console PC". It's a PC, but also a console.

Saying dependent types can be erased is like saying math only contains tautologies. Both are _technically_ true.

I kinda feel Obama is more of a Trojan horse. It was not he tried and failed to get what he campaigned for implemented, it was more like he did a U turn after he got elected. e.g. he called for universal health care but once he was elected

It was posted on Hacker News... https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=41407768 Author quite literally said bcachefs-tools "is impossible to maintain in Debian stable", and the reason cited was Rust.

Didn't they call Rust software "unpackageable" just a couple of months ago? IIRC they were talking about bcachefs-tools.

Yeah, Rust mostly just eliminates memory safety and data race problems, which is an enormous improvement compared to what we had previously. Unfortunately right now if you really want to write software that's guaranteed to be correct,

Sure async might be implemented by threadpools, but the threadpool itself is not what we usually refer to when we talk about async as a language feature. e.g. Rust async may be backed by a threadpool, but it could also run single threaded.

This just sounds like a threadpool implementation to me. Sure you can brand it async, but it's not what we generally mean when we say async.
