Haven't tried Meld and i'm always up for an enhanced workflow but merge/diff is all about context, the more context you can add about where something came from / is going to, its history etc the better. In this regard it

ah ok so as a library author you can't actually enforce _your_ assumptions about transitives, bc user of the library local lock file overrides but as a library user with a local lock file that I craft and care about it is effective. Th

it would take a drastically differently designed execution environment to support meaningful library level sandboxing. After packaging/linking/bundling/compiling etc depending on language/flavour often a library is indis

I didn't know that about yarn transitives, do you have a link explaining more about the problem? I assumed a yarn.lock would.. lock, interesting to know more.

ah cool, i've implemented a similar thing but baked into the app dao+authz layer (so easier to do). I would never guess people would use row level security for this for the reasons you've outlined, rarely (?) is one database the o

interesting idea, expect vimeo would be paying for bandwidth as a flat rate per GB/sec not per GB transferred. So their costs vs what they are charging would be quite different, also if their bandwidth costs are roughly flat (not based

Pricing relative to your rank as a percentile has some weird properties, one month you might be in the 99% then next month it cost you big $$ in the 1% with exactly the same traffic. That would be surprising to most people I’d expect, total

Reminds me of the vocal American n95 mask producer who wasn’t operating at 100% production 2 years ago bc he has seen it all before, knew buyers wouldn’t appear just bc American and would opt for cheaper products naturally undermining stabl

Not the reasons I expected I don’t see Navigation as a main problem and it can be solved quite neatly, not that much more complex than a normal site. Was expecting something about bundle size etc.

yeah gradle/maven packages benefit from being much more coarse grain, so fewer large packages, fewer authors, fewer transitives, fewer risks in theory. Quicker to download and manage too, it really is just the tiny size of JS packages

Yep agree, having spent some time digging into why Xcode builds are slow it looks like low investment is a major reason. The tooling and optimizations are fairly primitive compared to other ecosystems and harder to get right where they do e

What registry features do you lose doing it this way? a normal registry isn't just serving dumb files is it? It is essentially an API that can find images by tags, sha256 etc against a backend. It manages lifecycling of things as they

You can package a lambda as a container image, but lambda doesn’t itself run the container like it would in dockerd or kube etc, it’s just a packaging mechanism I believe.

What was the tipping point where spam won the SEO arms race? Feels like SEO has been a thing for decades, cat and mouse, back and forth and the outcome for the search user has been good/decent results for most of that time, there have

That is wasteful too, but deterministically wasteful. You know exactly how wasteful you are being and how much it will cost.. no surprises.

Yeah if they removed it there would definitely be commentary about how theyve changed. Plus there must be a whole team that managed that functionality, what would they do then? Help fix the search results maybe..

187MB of symbols seems like alot! Kind of funny that this bloat could be reduced by X% just by having a shorter path in the CI pipeline and not even stripping, also surprising that xcode doesn't strip swift symbols by default for a rel

Yeah it is essentially storing bytes in a encoded form.. it is never the most efficient way. uuid, hex, base64 whatever.. when it hits the db it can be decoded into bytes and stored more efficiently which is generally a good idea.

Yep came to say the same, because a lot of software is already hosted in a lower friction way by GitHub and similar. So unless you have a need/want to host it yourself and maybe benefit from the optimizations then why bother?

I think the most surprising coming from docker was that containerd can’t build images, just run them, thus nerdctl and things plus other userspace ways of building images too.. so many options.. Totally makes sense when you understand more

Is there an eli5 or similar on the differences between podman / docker / rancher / others? Feels unexplained (at least for me), how do I know which to choose when and what are the trade offs? I recently went deeper on Rancher
