That reasoning is plausible, but a large portion of their longevity could easily be due to network effects (libraries + legacy code) and nothing to do with the quality of the languages.

There are two more tests used for team selection after the USAMO (during the training camp).

I'm not sure about expanding on Bayes' theorem, but some other notions from ML/stats that would be good to know are overfitting/the bias-variance tradeoff and base rates. One instance where I've seen the former appl

I don't think you should claim to be a researcher on the topic if you're not in the academic system and haven't published peer-reviewed quantitative papers. "Independent researcher" (w/ a link to the bibliograp

There's some prior work in this area: https://hypothes.is/ Very functional, but I stick to private annotations and haven't noticed very many by others. They're also entirely open-source and there are componen

Yeah, until now I found it discouraging that most freely available material in distributed systems consisted of either reading lists or terse slides. I've seen people compare to the field to the humanities in that reading the primary s

There have been some efforts along these lines in computer science and math: http://theoryofcomputing.org/ (has some nice surveys if you're into theoretical computer science) http://discreteanalysisjournal.c

It looks like the first guy's paper is partially based on an idea well-known in the competitive programming community (makes sense given the 3 IOI medals). http://codeforces.com/blog/entry/18051 Cool.

I don't really think the physical approach is any more concrete than Scott Aaronson's approach (at least in the way most people talk about concreteness wrt pedagogy). The point of having examples is to illustrate how general princ

Indeed the typical wisdom in math is that the best way to understand a group (and the reason we usually care about one) is its actions. There's some quote to the effect of: "Just as with men, a group is known by its actions."

One possibility would be to use http://www.openscad.org/ as some sort of intermediate language. edit: And there are apparently a few standardized, lower-level ASCII formats including https://en.wikipedia.org/

That's fair but Rust has the same primary design goal and yet I find programming in it more ergonomic (despite Rust having a cranky borrow-checker that C++ lacks). I don't know how much of that is due to C++'s historical bagg

Preshing is a smart guy but this seems to miss the point in a way typical of C++ devs. Python—as with other languages—isn't just a list of features. It also has a guiding philosophy (made explicit in Python's case in https:/

Any comments on how your product and plans compare to https://sourcegraph.com/ ? They seem to have a similar offering with an on-premise version, though lacking the smooth editor integration.

http://gen.lib.rus.ec/ is a pretty good source (also Russia-based). I'm not sure whether it covers all textbooks of the more obscure kind, e.g., the ones typically referred to as "monographs," but it has work
