The funding source used by NumPy here is equally available to pandas developers. If someone with the experience to deliver wrote a good proposal I think there's a decent chance that it would be funded.

You can close a branch, which makes it stop appearing in the UI unless you explicitly ask for closed branches. You can never fully delete a branch since the branch is part of the commit metadata (as it should be, IMO).

Yes, the solution is to use a package manager that builds Python with an up-to-date version of OpenSSL. The long term solution is to patch Python to use SecureTransport, but I don't see anyone rushing to do that.

Currently sitting on a plane at O'Hare, can't get to gate because they won't let any planes leave to clear a spot for my plane. What a nightmare.

Cython does work with pypy, but via the cpyext emulation of the CPython C API. See this answer from one of the pypy devs when I asked about this about a year ago: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=10195892 Maybe cpyext h

Not sure what you mean about cython and the FFI. As far as I know, cython is tightly coupled to the CPython C API. I agree that cython is a good option if you only care about CPython.
