Someone tried to make an effort. The load icon's arrow is bright green, while the save icon's arrow is teal. Which is downright impossible to see at 1440x900. ...I think the idea might have been better than the implementation.

I always wondered why nobody else seemed to follow the lead of Lotus 1-2-3 for Windows. Use "save" and "load" icons that portray arrows pointing to and from folders [1]. Never have to worry about a floppy again. Turns out, these guys just d

This is the place. It's HN! I have a strong suspicion that CGAffineTransform and its associated methods are calculated through the ARM NEON co-processor. I don't see anything in the documentation you provided that mentions the GPU. It _coul

Would you care to elaborate, rather than be glib? QuartzGL runs all Core Graphics on the GPU[1]. It's only available on OS X. If you can show me evidence that some API on iOS runs Core Graphics on the GPU, I'd be happy to know. I do a fair

I don't really know what graphics you're drawing in your app, but this approach will kill the performance of anything that relies on the GPU. Since you're only using Core Graphics, this is acceptable. Core Graphics only has a CPU implementa

You're defeating yourself too soon. I think you will be very surprised as to how much people don't know. The regurgitation of information isn't a byproduct of laziness; it's a direct result of two things. 1. People don't like to read. 2. Th

If it's something you're passionate about, write about it. What you love will really show through your writing, give it a bit of color. Don't get too hung up on being an original provider of content. Few people are. Rather, think more about

I don't think there really is a clearly defined boundary here. I've worked on projects at past jobs where the designs demanded that we duplicate the look and feel of certain iOS system APIs and programs to a T. Apple passed those through ap

There's also the tiny problem that The Daily's content never did much that HTML5 couldn't. The best thing I can say in The Daily's favor is that the app took advantage of the native frameworks for kerning and text layout, even if the hyphen

Nitpicking, but The Daily uses JSON describing page layouts which map pretty closely to UIKit objects and properties. No Postscript, no PDF. You can see this for yourself if you let Charles or any kind of wire sniffer observe the network tr

There is some support for GLSL 3.3, 4.0 and 4.1 in OS X Mountain Lion; http://renderingpipeline.com/2012/11/first-hints-of-opengl-4... GLSL 3.3 was present but hilariously broken in Lion, if you explicitly requested it in your shaders. Ho

There's less of a performance hit at runtime than using a scripting language like Ruby/Python/Lua/Perl/PHP, since the generated code uses a fair amount of compiled C. You can use Smalltalk-style messaging that C++ and C alone wouldn't give
