In the post-nuclear world economic pressure is the only tool we have to deal with bad actors. It's why we sanction North Korea, Iran, and Russia.

I've heard that companies rarely enforce these clauses unless you really burned a bridge. If anything they won't give you severance if you quit within the first year.

Our only tool is economic policy. The elephant in the room is that the pro-Democracy West is actively funneling money to the PRC.

Grim but true. It's the nuclear option: force the government to order their soldiers to go to war against the citizenry.

I would shell out money for DLC that just added good AI. Computer players are so important for a game with friendship-ending potential.

Roast you? How about this: a version of this comment is posted on just about every JavaScript post for the last five years and it hasn't changed much.

I think if the set of people who play Hearthstone/Overwatch and the set people who watch the NBA can both get riled up about the same issue it's spread well beyond the tech community. Eventually YouTube will have to start caring.

Do not conflate this with hatespeech, it leads the discussion away from the issue. Communist bandit refers to the government, not a protected class. It's not in any way similar to posting a racist/sexist/homophobic comment. T

I'm pretty bearish on the established technical ladder unless you're very high up it. If your job title contains a number it can only work against you.

For the same reason I use React instead of jQuery. Kutty/Intercooler handle simple AJAX very cleanly but as the volume of data and scope of interactivity increases it becomes difficult to manage.

Most apps I work on deal with large amounts of complex domain objects which are constantly being updated. A recent project ended up sending an average of 1 request per second. Doing all this server-side is a non-starter. This is why I build

One of you is definitely wrong, but it depends on the scope of the project. I would never build an SPA with intercooler and I would never build a static website with Angular/React.

React has fantastic tools for state management built-in. The difficulty is a particular flavor of state management: data that lives in the "global" scope but can be used locally in components in a reactive fashion. We have some go

Right, it's not that managing state was hard it's that sharing the logic to manage it was hard. Hooks are additive in that way -- it's offering you the ability to re-use your stateful React logic in the same way you can re-us

The US already has a system for this: accredited investors. I believe the thresholds are $200k/yr income for several years or at least $1m in assets. This makes me wonder if TON ran afoul of the SEC somehow.

That's not why hooks were invented. Hooks are by definition component local.

The majority of the projects I work on target users on desktops with modern browsers. You have to get into the massive 10mb range before noticing any lag, and even then only on an empty cache. SEO isn't a concern either, all of our mar

Thank you. This is one of the first things I tell people in my web-dev workshop. They're probably not going to be building websites, they most likely will be building web applications.

Most of the apps I've worked on don't have conversions and aren't indexed by search engines. One app I worked on recently did have a mobile version that received a small fraction of all traffic, and even then overwhelmingly

Maturity matters, unfortunately. I've been looking for a chance to try out Sapper but I wouldn't feel comfortable recommending that we start a major new project with it.

Sure, that's a trade-off you have to make a decision on when designing the core architecture. If your users are sitting behind corporate T1 connections near an AWS data center bundle size doesn't matter at all. If your users are s

Absolutely agreed. I have never in my life had a stakeholder get on my case because our site was 3mb when it could have been 1mb. I have had many stakeholders get on my case because we couldn't turn around features fast enough, or the

I thought the quiz was really missing the point. The whole point of reactive programming is to not worry about execution order.

Sure, what I mean is you'd never use a React.Component like you would a class in Java or another OO language. You never instantiate it, pass instances of it around, or call any of its public methods. It serves just as a container for s
