From a performance point of view: test and measure! Find the worst bottleneck, and reduce it. Rinse and repeat. NewRelic is a great tool to help you do this. Common performance problems to look out for in Rails are: * Missing database index

I couldn't agree more. The cost (time, money, etc) of setting up their own website and processing their own transactions is obviously prohibitive, as most nonprofits don't accept online donations. Lots of nonprofits also know exactly what p

Powerful tools require a good understanding of them to get the most out of them. The best powerful tools don't require an in-depth understanding of them to get started (think git, rails or Linux). But mastering them over time will make yo

I'm really excited by the new things that are being tried for desktop OSes. They really haven't changed much since I started using computers. I wonder how long it will take for touch become mainstream in the laptop market.

Unless you're a great writer, keep things short and snappy. It's really hard to hold a reader's attention.

In my experience, online ads don't work that well for small professional services businesses. As always, YMMV. The best leads are always referrals. After finishing a job, make sure your client knows that you're looking for more work. If you

That's the point of my post. There are subtle differences between SQLite and MySQL/Postgres. You should use the same database in dev, test and production.

Thanks for your thoughts. I'd argue that SQLite isn't appropriate for production because of its slow speed and highly granular concurrency[1]. I'm all for keeping SQLite as the default database for development - it lowers the barrier for en
