Immunotherapies are still immature but far from snake oil at this stage. They routinely achieve miraculous remissions but also lead to many adverse events. For most late stage tumors, chemotherapy will only, at best, increase life expectanc

HtDP is a great book, but probably too elementary for the average HN reader looking to begin with SICP.

With one of the third party cases, such as those from Akasa, they are nice inexpensive fanless machines with excellent Linux support and low power consumption.

I also found it a bit too philosophical in the sense that we can already explain a lot of the variations in outcomes to infection. For example, HLA/MHC is a family of genes tasked with the presentation of antigens (e.g. chunks of prote

Something important to note is that the authors use normalized compression distance (NCD). NCD is a way to approximate Kolmogorov complexity. This is a pretty old idea, see [1,2]. Old but still very useful, like perceptrons. [1] Li and Vita

In practice, mainstream distributions do not offer ready-to-use zero-conf sandboxing for userland applications. There are of course exceptions, like those using Flatpak, but what I would like to see is Firejail/bwrap applied to all bin

I know, I maintain quite a few items in NixPkgs. My point is that Linux distributions are not taking sandboxing seriously compared to mobile or macOS, and this is a big security issue. E.g., if one runs a compromised binary, such as PyTorch

It does, but it is far from seamless / widely used. It is a little bit more than firejail packed for NixOS.

It's actually annoying NixOS doesn't offer good default sandboxing. Sandboxing should appeal to the Nix crowd, but somehow it's not been integrated yet. AFAIK, GuixSD is working on sandboxing. In general, sandboxing is pretty

Sad news. NUCs could have been an excellent platform if they had tried to work a bit more on cooling. On third-party cases, NUCs were great. But on stock cases, some models were too noisy. Still, they provided great value. Nonetheless, I ag

That's right, but at the same time Flux, the default choice is not mature at all compared to JAX. So that advantage is only on paper. I would really prefer to use Julia, I actually dislike Python, but it's unrealistic to implement

I know about this. It's heading in the right direction, but still lacks many Gadfly features, let alone ggplot2 ones.

There's still one major bottleneck. There's no TF / PyTorch / JAX replacement. For small things, interop with R is good, so one can defer things to R packages and get access to a great set of functionality.

The best plotting APIs I have seen are those from MATLAB and Mathematica. I have used Makie a few times, and it is very flexible and well designed. I am hoping they provide a declarative API that emulates Gadfly more closely. Gadfly is grea

Yes, two extra notes on this: 1. Weakly informative priors can be good to regularize and stabilize inference in scenarios with a low amount of data. 2. In case of the review scenario presented by the OP, a hierarchical model could be even b

There was a NIH moratorium, but it was lifted in 2017. I don't agree about the point of virology being just about studying gain of function. There are tons of things you can study in virology without needing to create novel viruses.
