The Basque Country has a GDP (PPP) of 108 [1]. Higher than France (101), as an average, or Italy (97). I'd say its a well developed region comparable to Northern Italy. Both were badly hit by the Euro. Had they kept their own currencie

I'm confused by this statement. For me Linux boot is incredibly fast, even on old machines with slow storage. For example, my MacBook Air 11 (running Linux) boots to login so fast I barely see any boot logs. systemd-analyze reports the

I think it is already seeing some adoption at normal & boring companies, which is a sign of maturity. Frankly, the biggest problem is that it needs some better docs, i.e. some serious corporate funding to get them written.

Sure, but if you run the same Nix flake on two macOS machines with the same architecture, it will have the same behavior. Most of package managers don't offer that guarantee. Only Guix has a similar level of assurance? Nix openly recog

I collaborate with people that use macOS while I use Linux. For reproducible environments, Nix has served us well. Despite the myth, it is not hard to use unless you need to package something complicated or messy. Then it may become hard.

Try NixOS. It's the most important advance for Linux in many years. It hides a lot of complexity. Most systems can be configured with a file that is just a sequence of key-value pairs. For example, enabling PulseAudio is simply: hardwa

This is a didactic exercise. Julia is fantastic, but lacks funding to develop a differentiable programming ecosystem that can compete with Torch or Jax. These two have corporate juggernauts backing them. Still, it is quite remarkable how fa

This is why Linux should be taking things like the xz exploit more seriously and, at least, adopting a solution like firejail or bwrap everywhere. It's not a perfect solution, but it's a step in the right direction towards patchin

What freaks me out is that clearly many large manufacturers design boxes so that it is easy to resell returned products as new. Lots of mobile phones are packaged with weak seals that do not damage the cardboard once taken out. Google does

IMHO we should go beyond this. In biology and medicine, you need to spend a significant amount of money to catch errors, as you have to reproduce huge costly experiments. I think NIH, Wellcome and other funders should consider creating a r

IMHO, Airbus is a good counterexample of how EU could do things better. It's not perfect, but it's competitive and successful. Lots of countries contributed to its success, leaving (most) political issues aside.

I've joined some large EU efforts in the past, and it's always like this. Lots of different parties involved focused on producing tons of absurd documents, and nothing else. Some have good intentions, but it doesn't matter. T

This is a very accurate, and very depressing, summary of why EU is stuck since the 2000s. Most EU tech and non-tech companies, with some notable exceptions like Spotify, have this mentality.

I found it decent for niche languages like Haskell and Isabelle/HOL. Isabelle is quite challenging, but there is a mid-sized corpus to train on. So I was hoping the opposite would be true, but maybe just wishful thinking.

Does this mean that according to EU, or France, E2E-encrypted platforms need to "cooperate" (provide backdoors)? Or does it refer to public channels only?

The problem is that avoiding microplastics in food is really hard . Lots of food that is not packaged in plastic is full of microplastics. These are leaking into food during processing or from the environment. Car tires are full of plastic
