It's really "because most users don't care". When go out to buy a TV or a car or a fridge, I just get the best one out there. I don't do research on whether they are based on open specifications/protocols. I do

Do you know how well NextCloud works in a home environment? Is it really easy to automate the punching of a hole in the home firewall to allow access from anywhere? If you know of a project that automates this punching, it's a great co

If you are looking at custom domain + self-hosting, I suggest looking into cloudron.io. They have wordpress as an app (but I recommend looking into Ghost as well).

I loved reading https://github.com/servo/servo/issues/12125 . It is a great example of open source persistence despite it not being a priority. Things move forward at snail pace and stalls multiple times. Just

Can someone explain how badly `snap install --classic anbox-installer` might mess up my development machine? Can I expect uninstall to properly clean up?

I am very happy for Lyft! Would not be pretty if they went down and we are left only with Uber. Uber will start bullying even more.

I should have been more clear. (In my mind) The primary reason why people go to gitlab.com was for "free" tier. This is basically for free everything. Now that CI is paid, I am wondering how this will work out. For me, this is gre

Interesting. I would be curious to see how this works out. My understanding was that people went to GitLab for the same reason they went to bitbucket - unlimited private repos.

Oh, thanks for the link. This is quite incredible. Where are the ads btw? I don't see a single ad on your website :-) Or did you remove them post-acquisition?

Wow, 6k in ad revenue per month sounds a lot. How many page hits are required to get this kind of ad revenue?

I think many opensource communities do not want to dogfood on other opensource projects anymore. They want the best product out there for other things and more often than not these products are closed source SaaS products.

You are horrified of a future but I am already horrified with the present where I am at the mercy of Google for my startup. Their search is opaque and my product has to do various hacks to be discovered. Email from any of my servers end in

Anonymous mode is really just a placebo. All it does it keep your browser history clean. Don't be fooled that Google does not know it's you. Google can easily track you using the IP address. This is really as simple as I saw this

Does GitHub charge companies when keeping only opensource code? Like the big companies like Google, Microsoft have lots of code there - who is paying for it? Or this is just free marketing for GH?
