I would find this more plausible if my Samsung Android devices were a) regularly updated with Android tech as opposed to seemingly lagging the rest of the industry b) supported worth a hill of beans instead of getting a "uhhhh we don't supp

TL;DR: We invest in brilliant people who get things done, we don't mind if they're jerks as long as they get things done.

I liked Digg a lot back in the day. I've checked in a few times in the last year and found nothing new or fixed to recommend it and a great deal to not. Thanks guys, good luck, but I'm not planning on coming back until my friends start tell

Have you ever seen their local talent? These are the guys who built Symbian. Nokia should have bought Palm (and similarly pivoted to it and away from the existing awful tech).

I often wonder why Lua isn't more popular in general - it's really a pretty good language. Seems like it exists primarily in the game environment. Or maybe it's just because World of Warcraft uses it and thus the elephant in the room makes

Heck, that's no stretch at all, 4HWW was all about outsourcing your research and production. Saying "now apply that to web page generation" is a one sentence book.

Jason Calacanis and Tim Ferris are the two most polarizing dudes here on HN as far as I can tell. But love 'em or hate 'em, they do both get lots of press.

Yeah I used to piss off the CFO a couple of jobs ago by spending entirely modest amounts of money to make the engineers happy/productive and explaining "this is something where I would spend my own money to do this, and in fact I did, if yo

That is a very odd assertion... if you're a good chef, and have "come up through the ranks", you've probably had to clean up after yourself... but I don't think that means that you can take the dishwasher and make him the head chef. Unless

A decent rule of thumb is usually "would you spend it if it was your own money" - most people aren't going to go buy $20,000 couches for the office, but they might buy an $800 couch or a $150 Craigslist special. Feel free to ignore this if

Well, let's be fair - "I can change" is the only reasonable response - the alternative is that Google gives them the death penalty.

I think Mahalo has refocused appropriately, and I am pleasantly surprised to see that. But I think this is no longer a sustainable business model. If you need to spend as much on content generation as I'm seeing cited here, your time to bre

If you have someone on your advisory board who has been through this before, even in an unrelated space, spend quite a while talking to them. Possibly offer them a slice to come in and help you get this done at good terms. If you don't, con

Sure - but the VC isn't going to come write code for you, whereas if he can connect your sales team with the right customers, that beats the pants off someone who just flat doesn't know your space.

This is ideal! VC generalists may be successful businessmen in the general sense, but investors who don't know your industry are inherently dumb money regardless of how much they swear up and down that they bring value to the table.

There are two good rebuttals to this article: 1. Apps are useful in an offline market, like when you are in the subway with no data service. 2. People don't like micropayments. They are willing to put up with ads instead. Why do people keep
