(raises hand) I complained about having to use an iPhone - mostly because of AT&T though. Thankfully, both Verizon moved in and I moved on from that job.

Very little collateral damage when you are hitting someone with a rock as compared to blowing up the surrounding block.

Yes - kinetic kill ideas are pretty sound. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kinetic_bombardment#Project_Tho... Lifting that much mass into orbit is pricy though.

Any high availability system inherently aims for that, but "never" is a strong word. Sooner or later, you need to upgrade or replace physical hardware.

It's great to get more than money from an investor. It's often the case that you get money plus various intrusive behavior that is of negative value (requiring time to manage the shareholders, etc). If you have your choice of where to get m

If this is a useful part of corporate culture here (it rarely is) that's one of the first reasonable arguments I've heard AGAINST telecommuting. In general, I think I'd opt for a telecapable workforce, but there's certainly some reasonabili

Remember, gang, make good friends at companies that can/will acquire your startup. Some level of talent acquisition exit beats the pants off general purpose failure.

Man, I feel old, I remember when Sony was The Brand Name in consumer electronics. Between rootkits and intrusive behavior and this sort of thing... I can't think of the last time I bought something with the Sony brand on it. (To be fair, it

Oh, ok. The article seems to be talking about designers as the user-centric UX guys, or at least that's how I took it. I believe that this is critical to mainstream adoption, but agree that your point is excellent as well.

The UX of Facebook beats the pants off Myspace, but still... doesn't strike me as a triumph of design. Though to be fair this may just be because things break more readily at a half billion users.

As much as I'd like to see companies busted for abusing the DMCA to take down things they object to, I would rather it had been one of the traditional Big Media Thugs who was on the wrong end of a lawsuit for fraudulent DMCA claims rather t

Now I like the idea of a moon base and space research as much as the next engineer (and we here at HN seem pretty friendly to it) but I have the general impression that without commensurate investment, this is on par with saying "NASA is di

You could say the same thing about Los Angeles (massive water requirements over and above what native supply provides) but I don't see us abandoning that particular location anytime soon either. (Edit: clarified LA to Los Angeles)

I've had phones stolen enough that I'd say "yes, too accessible" - your mileage may vary. Timestamped travel information generally equates to "hey, this guy returns home between 7 and 8:30 most nights, works in the office five days a week,

The only way this could be more hair-splitty is to argue "Apple isn't tracking you, it's tracking your device". Yes, there are valid reasons for this to exist. Doesn't change my user perspective that this is an electronic trail I do not wan

Likely one of two (or two of two) reasons: 1) A particular location is running BSD - a branch office or the like. The whole company isn't migrated. 2) Migration doesn't extend to rebuilding the legacy internal software built over the last t

It's attractive to propose "let's build a new kind of city" or if you prefer, a new sort of living style, but this is one of the classic boil-the-ocean sort of problems that any ground-up engineering solution faces. How do we migrate people

There were plenty of free (subsidized to zero) phones available when the iPhone came out. They weren't feature-competitive but they were available, free, and mediocre. From a set top box perspective, this isn't necessarily a differentiator.

There's a more important constraint here: people change out their small consumer electronics MUCH faster. They buy new phones every year or two, arguably as fast as Apple puts them out. Same was largely true for iPods. They don't replace th
