It's not too different from the publish or perish culture in US academia, only with a solid cash reward for publishing in peer reviewed journals. I mean professors here are filtered for number of articles here too. Considering the amou

Wechat had audio messages way before whatsapp. And the animated emojis way before facebook. Both used to be the shit when I was using wechat a couple of years ago. Also you can use wechat to as essentially a credit card. It's like a bl

Actually they weren't even demonstrating. It was a gathering of people from inside and outside Amritsar, who came there for a festival. The order against gatherings of more than 4 people weren't distributed well, and so most of th

I don't think you've worked a lot with numpy. Matrix indexing is a nightmare in numpy and the documentation for just it is 3 pages long.

Flag is a pretty obscure term that you learn from using the linux command line. Booleans are in math and engineering. Flag is not clear at all and using it instead of boolean, especially when you don't even use the term boolean directl

I find that the amount of bugs I tend to get when I copy-paste code far outweighs any potential aesthetic pleasure I get from seeing no begin-end block identifiers. Also, I don't want to let python have credit for not having those bloc

Add in ducks and geese and a whole slew of other animals and I end up wondering if I'm programming in a zoo with ruby lol.

I think he means those intro to ruby tutorials where they make ruby (and programming in general) sound all magical, where it's so easy to program and programming is just unicorns and kittens or whatever. It becomes tiring and dumb afte

Got to agree. I used to google pandas problems for remotely complex stuff because it wasn't really intuitive how to do it in pandas. Now I have a better context for how simple such things can be because of data.table in R.

Not really. The idea is that they are hiding their profits, and so their profits are not being taxed. But the actual profit (as a percentage of the revenue) that they are hiding is expected to be similar inside and outside of the EU.

I doubt it. I use only windows but I write my code using emacs and compile my code using mingw. Linux is way too high maintenance for me. I just don't have the time for it.

Well the obvious problem is that you have to test all of the code paths before deciding that your code is type safe. Static types do not have that problem.

The thing is I can go to Prague and drink great beer for cheap (seriously, it's usually around $2) at restaurants, while the cheap beer you drink in America is just god awful.

Beyond impractical. Besides it taking 10x as long to peer review something, I can't even imagine my advisor willing to do this. Most professors don't even touch code, they leave it to the graduate students. Hell, I know professors

By module system, do you mean the ability to do something like "import sys; sys.function(blah)". As in having namespaces? Julia obviously has modules..

Any slightly complicated indexing of array in numpy is a pain. I've spent hours reading the numpy documentation for indexing. After that project I've completely forgotten how to do indexing in numpy. I expect I'll spend more

Try Julia. It's fast and it combines a dynamic language and types very nicely.
