I wonder what voltage is required to kill the Mediatek chip? Maybe a simple jig that put -24v through it could fry it? Of course, if you're expecting it, this device should be relatively simple to stop. I can imagine more stealthy vari

Interesting, I just tried a version of the readings the mind in the eyes test here: http://socialintelligence.labinthewild.org/mite/ The test seemed somewhat biased to a certain social background however.

Scientists often hype the claims in their own papers, in this case: "These data show that the illusion of feeling another person nearby is caused by misperceiving the source and identity of sensorimotor (tactile, proprioceptive, and mo

To me that's a business transaction. Praise would be "Thanks, Apple, for supporting privacy!" then not necessarily buying any of their products.

I feel this is a legitimate criticism of Apple. Not only do they sell the product at a price that funds development (and gives them a healthy profit) they also sell unavoidable Ads (in the AppStore). Ads in apps themselves I'm reasonab

Why would you want to "praise" a company. Publicly traded companies operate for financial gain. If you feel a company is supporting your interests you might want to consider buy their products. Make sure it's known that you&#

Hmmm... this story is about a PhD student. There's an argument that you should be paid a salary to receive an education. However I think it would also apply to undergraduate degrees (and indeed in the UK students used to receive grants

Imagine you had the money today (you'd already, automatically sold all the stock). How much would you buy? Once you've figured that out sell everything except the amount you would buy. It's effectively the same decision, but

Interestingly, I want to know none of those things. I'd be more interested in knowing how statistically likely the chemicals are to increase my risk of getting cancer.

While I agree the situation was very different, arguably the iPhone was built with venture money. NeXT did receive venture funding (which obviously became the core os MacOS and iOS). Fingerworks, was also a key acquisition. I can't fin

Right, I feel like this is a bigger issue than the privacy angle too. For privacy/security, I feel like it's only really going to help to turn off all radios (airplane mode).
