It's a "temporarily embarrassed millionaire" variant, I think. "Temporarily embarrassed parent of a future doctor".

When I noticed them they were covered in wasp pupae, so maybe that slowed them down. I'm in the Eastern US, btw.

To be clear I think this is fine! It’s rare to have leverage over capital (if indeed they do). Milk it!

Also ironic given that emacs with a LSP server is more than capable of slowing a dev machine to a crawl

I don’t think “fuck you I’ve got mine” is an apt characterization of people struggling to afford their heating bill.

It also doesn't necessarily matter if the data centers actually raise electricity rates. Regardless of whether or not they do, you can block their construction and try to horse-trade it for relief on energy prices.

Data centers are conflated with rising energy costs. It's partly about people's nominal objections, but mostly an attempt to hold them hostage to extract some energy bill subsidies (and general cost of living relief).

You're not getting it into an urban brownfield unless it comes with price controls on energy. I live amongst the urban brownfields of Baltimore and our politicians are under tons of pressure to stop data center projects (and to tar and

I think the main strength of the AI is just that its schedule is not a constraint. Anyone can get a decision now-ish, without filtering through tiers of middle management.

The AI mode on Google search is pretty impressive. Helped me figure out what a bunch of stuff I was seeing out the window was while traveling.

For one thing I think “art” doesn’t encompass informational content, or discussion. Like it doesn’t fit podcasts at all really.

Perhaps theoretically, with good practice, but at my job it’s fucking brutal. But to your larger point I would much rather work on improving that than let it drive me back to C fetishism.

Oh, I get that. That’s what I’m saying. I hear “Better C” and my initial reaction is “what’s the point”. Like, why would you aim for “Worse C++”? I mean, compile times. That’s fair.

A day or two ago someone posted about abandoning Haskell because compilation times had become a bottleneck with Agents. FWIW

Yeah, I mean … as a C++ dev I have those same existential “what’s the point” questions about Zig.

My point is that it’s a non-decision. You can use AI later, when the models are better. In the short term, you can address the anti-AI market.

In particular, I just don’t buy into the “left behind unless” framework. Perhaps Anthropic will create God in the Machine. Not foreclosing on that. But will it matter so much who was fucking around with Opus five e-folding times ago? Either

Sure. That’s why I said “short-term” and “change your mind later”. The thing about laggards is their money spends the same as everyone else’s.

The risk here is that a deep-pocketed entity elects to forgo funding Zig development because they don’t want to sign up for this level of dirty laundry airing if things go poorly.

I don’t disagree with your characterization. But from a purely Machiavellian perspective I don’t see a lot of downside in courting this group in the short term.
