Is it moral to wear shoes into a Indian temple? How do you argue that without going circular? If you ask me, the only moral arguments that aren't going to be circular are those that are based on Utilitarianism (or some similar form of Con

I'm with the camp that thinks that having to code on a whiteboard for an interview is just INANE . Worse than that, I find it to be borderline abusive. The whole concept just makes me quite mad. I graduated from MIT, and in my first progra

Speaking as someone who loves most of Apple's design, I do find there to be a (very) few other close-to-perfect products: TiVo's are perfect, and yet they are nothing like Apple's products. My Miata is close-to-perfect (other than the stere

Thanks! Yeah, it's rather unsettling to spend some time to writing up my experiences only to have my post end up in the negative numbers and all grayed out for no apparent reason. I'm not sure what's up with that -- it makes you feel like y

"Opaque" syncing of symbolic links means to sync the link itself, rather than syncing what the link points to. Copying or syncing what the link points to, rather than the link itself is called "transparent" copying or syncing of symlinks. T

I second the recommendation of Insync. I use it on three Macs, and so far it has worked flawlessly as far as I can tell. I haven't beat on it mercilessly, but I did use it for all the course material for the two free Stanford classes I took

I took two of the classes and they never once claimed that either of these classes were the same as the Stanford class. In fact, they stated several times that they were not the same, and made it quite clear that you would not be getting St

Now that I think about it, I do think that I heard somewhere that the free AI class has a final project. IIRC, it's a "challenge" that is the same for every student, and the solutions are ranked by how well they solve the problem according

I just don't want my degree devalued by people who aren't as astute as yourself when it comes to the gap between the online courses and those taken by Stanford students. I can certainly understand this worry, but I don't think you really

I took the free class, and have looked at the material for CS 229, and there's no way that I would ever claim that I had mastered CS 229. CS 229 looks to be brutally difficult, and I have an MIT degree. Yes, we had our brutally difficult cl

I could not disagree more. I have an MIT degree, and I thought it was remarkably refreshing to have the difficult made easy, rather than vice versa. Not that I have huge complaints with my MIT education, but having taken some classes at Har

To be fair to Emacs, Emacs had the key bindings it has for cut and paste, etc., long before there were such conventions for cut and paste.
